Junebug lay against Connie’s feet like a big, warm potato. She
snorted and snored, and Connie wiggled her bare toes into
Junebug’s warm back. She flipped to the next page in her
notebook, sighed, and tried to focus on the work she was supposed
to be doing, but she really just wanted to snuggle Junebug.
Just then, Connie heard a yowl, and in a moment something
warm and soft brushed against her calf.
“Mittens, no! Not now!” Connie whispered. But there was no
stopping Mr. Mittens once he got a thought into his head. He hissed
at Junebug and popped her in her sleeping head with one of his soft
paws. Junebug yelped, jumped up, and scuttled out of the room,
her long claws clicking on the hardwood floor.
“Thanks a lot, Mittens,” Connie said, as Mittens jumped into her
lap, turned once in a circle, and then lay down. Connie looked
longingly after Junebug. “You’ve ruined it.”
