Task on Lord Byron 1
GEORGE GORDON. LORD BYRON
Read the introduction to Lord Byron in the Norton Anthology (pp. 612-616)
Don Juan Canto I.
Read Canto I (pp. 673-704) where the hero is presented and his affair with
Donna Julia is described, and answer the following questions:
1. Stanzas 1-7. What is the main tone of this poem? Why do you think this is so?
2. Describe the two married couples (Don José and Donna Inez & Don Alfonso
and Donna Julia) that are introduced in the first canto. Look particularly at
stanzas 23, 25, 26, 62, 65.
3. What is Byron satirizing in Canto I? Look at stanzas 26, 39-41, 188-9.
4. Enumerate the characteristics of the Byronic Hero that can be found. Look
particularly at the following excerpts: Stanzas 9, 38, 54, 90-4.
5. Who is the narrator? The "I" persona? What kind of narrator is he? Look
particularly at stanzas 23, 24, 52-3, 203.
6. Find similarities with Byron’s life that might justify why his contemporaries
identified him with his character Don Juan or with other themes in the poem.
7. Do you find Byron’s style in Don Juan different from Keats’s or Shelley’s? In
which sense would you say it is different?
