Obesity Epidemic
The Obesity epidemic is a global health issue that many people are facing and has been
gathering a lot of attention the past few years. It is the number of overweight and obese
individuals that continues to rise. There are very many factors that play a role in this epidemic
and that is sending out many consequences to the community’s health and overall well-being.
The epidemic was caused by various factors, Including Increased calorie consumption,
easy access to high-calorie foods, processed foods, and large portion sized meals that lead to
overeating. Easy access gives off a dopamine effect pleasing the human body in a fast and
convenient way not knowing that these foods are so bad for us. McDonalds, Taco Bell, Arby’s,
Pizza-Hut, etc. all those are examples of convenient fast food that we should consider to be
unhealthy. They can be okay at a time and place but not on a regular weekly, daily basis.
A person’s lifestyle can even play the role of being obese. daily actions, job, screen time,
income for the access to healthier foods, lack of exercise and genetics. All of those are examples
that can lead to obesity. Personally, coming from a broken and poorly educated background, I am
trying to break the chain and be the one who made the change. Over the past two years I have
dedicated my life to the fitness industry along with my lifestyle outside of the gym. It takes me to
be disciplined, and mentally tough. Training my mind to be dedicated to doing that is one of the
best decisions I have made. In the CNN article by Sandy LaMotte, she said “If America does
not collectively adopt healthier eating habits, over half of the nation will be obese within
10 years.” (LaMotte). That would be the curse. It is a serious matter that I personally have
been taking seriously, and I eventually would like to gather as much knowledge as possible
in the next few years so I can teach others and influence people for the better and change
lives.
Some ways that people can start to help themselves if they are in this epidemic
would be to first throw all the junk out. Junk is cancer in my opinion and does zero good
for us. Besides getting the convenient pleasure they are seeking. Soda Pop is just as bad
too. It has numerous amounts of sugar. If you do diet pop, it’s not as bad but still is some
type of poisonous drink that does us no good. Water is our best friend, and we should be
filling our bodies with it. I started off by getting myself a water bottle to carry around and
keep filled all day. Occasional drinks can be okay to have, it is a fact that some of these
people in this world are drinking their Dr.Pepper on the daily as soon as they wake up and
before they go to bed. Eating out at restaurants is not necessarily terrible, it just depends on
what side of the menu you are on and how much you are consuming in one setting. In the
viral YouTube video on “How America is causing global obesity; they say that eating out
and baking is the top 40% thing to do in the U.S” (Netflix is a joke).
If someone who is obese asked me what I think they should do---I would say, that
they need to sit down, write down everything they do daily already and to burn that piece
of paper. I would then have them get a new piece of paper and write down a new and
improved routine, set realistic goals and start the following day. Those routines would
consist of waking up and doing cardio to get the day started off right, then eating a small
HEALTHY Breakfast. Figuring out a balanced diet, they would need to focus on
consuming a consistent diet that includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins,
whole grains, and healthy fats. They would also need portion control.
Being aware of how much you are eating is extremely important. Eating 5 twinkies
in one setting compared to 5 twinkies in a month can make a huge difference. Next on that
list. Would be a regular exercise plan, adding this to a routine is key. If one was obese I
would have them start off doing more daily activities rather than someone else who I would
have gone into a gym and did physical push and pulling weights. As they start to make
progress they would then get into a gym. Once things start to look up, tracking their
progress would be great to have for the future and show off your progress, but along with
looking back at that to tell yourself you never want to go back to that person again.
Lastly, would be the mental side of it. For starters, getting adequate sleep is
important for the mind as well as the body to have time to recover, 7-8 hours is
recommended. Seeking help is essential. They could consider joining a therapy session or a
group talk to express emotions, come together as one to attack very realistic goals.
Managing stress and your emotions especially if you are a male is important. Men’s mental
health is not talked upon enough as it should be, so we should find ways to cope with stress
that can haunt us for a very long time or things could go south with overeating, mental
trauma, PTSD or even suicide. At the end of the day consistency is our biggest key factor
to a weight loss journey. In the article Public Health Considerations Regarding obesity, they
said “Obesity is a national epidemic affecting every one in three adults and one in six children in
the United States of America. The rising trend has been attributed to change in environmental
and food practices in the face of the increasingly sedentary lifestyles of people.”
In conclusion, the obesity epidemic is a global health issue that many people are facing
and has been gathering a lot of attention the past few years. It is the number of overweight and
obese individuals that continues to rise. There are very many factors that play a role in this
epidemic and that is sending out many consequences to the community’s health and overall well-
being. So, it is essential to approach weight loss with patience and a long-term perspective.
Focusing on overall health and well-being rather than a quick fix unrealistically.
