FILM ANALYSIS
I. Film Analysis
A. Brief Summary of the Plot.
Two astronomers find a comet that is orbiting the sun. Despite the excitement among
scientists, the comet's impact will actually strike the planet precisely in six months and
fourteen days. Given that the impact is going to wipe out every living thing on the planet
we all call home, Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) and her professor, Dr. Randall Mindy
(Leonardo Di Caprio), immediately comprehend the doomsday results. Only six months
remain before the comet makes landfall, so making sense of the 24-hour news cycle while
keeping the public interested on social media before it becomes outdated is proving to be
extremely engaging.
B. Write a critique about the film by answering the following guide questions.
1. How might industrial, social, and economic factors have influenced the film?
The movie's startling resemblance to modern climate change theory is one of its most
remarkable and rather unsettling elements. The meteorite was supposed to stand in for
the global catastrophe, although the filmmaker didn't openly reference the phenomenon
in the movie.
2. What specific STS issue/s were depicted in the film? Do you agree on how the
issue was presented in the film? Why or why not
From what I've seen in the movie, there is this scene where it was election time and the
astronauts reported the current situation to the highest position of government, but
instead the president didn’t bother taking the issue seriously and just proceeded with the
worry of not winning the election. I do agree on this issue because I know for a fact that
this kind of situation also happens in real life.
3. What feelings and realizations came up to you after watching the film?
I came to understand that being a leader isn't just about credentials and authority, but
rather influence and occasionally avarice. Self-interest feeds the destructive nature of
greed. An overwhelming or envious want, particularly for money and pleasures, is
definitely the definition of the president of the movie. This can be anything from acting in
the best interests of the planet to canceling the expedition when it becomes clear that a
comet impact would be advantageous. Being motivated by greed is bad for organizations
because choices are no longer made using rational, unbiased data.
4. Do you think the film accurately portrays the real-world failings of worldwide
government, media and corporations? What do you feel was inaccurate? Discuss
your answer.
Yes, for example, the COVID-19 incident in our country where they didn’t close the airport
because they heard about the news from another country already, but the president only
cares about the relationship with the other country and doesn't care about the people in
the country. That is why so many people died and so many suffered.
5. How is our real-world situation similar or different to the plot of the movie?
The terrifying, reflective film Don't Look Up explores what is going to occur if humans
continue to reject science. Because billionaires control our culture, it demonstrates clearly
how Americans prioritize money over people. Even if everyone will surely perish as a
result of the comet's effects, a movie about questionable attempts to generate money
from comet materials makes capitalism even riskier. The fact that the fictitious threat is
not too far off from the present and the immediate future is what makes this movie scary
to watch. I can see how the characters he plays may feel strongly about the movie.
