Bio Analogy

The document compares various cell organelles to everyday objects and systems based on their structures and functions. The nucleus is compared to a town hall as it communicates with other parts of the cell. The Golgi apparatus and mitochondria are both compared to transport systems, with the Golgi apparatus packaging molecules like a UPS truck and mitochondria providing energy like the digestive system. The plasma membrane, cytoskeleton, endoplasmic reticulum and ribosomes are all described as maintaining cell structure and transporting materials around the cell in a similar way to security guards, beams in a house, highways and factories. The vacuole and lysosome are both involved in storage and breakdown of materials, likened to a refrigerator and stomach respectively.

The nucleus is like the town hall. It has the most recognizable part of the cell.

It is surrounded by a
double membrane. It communicates with most organs in the cell. Just as town hall communicates with
others so does the nucleus with other cells. It runs the place.

The Golgi apparatus is like a UPS truck. It is a membrane bound structure with a single membrane. It is a
stack of membrane- bound vesicles that are important. They package macromolecules for transport
elsewhere. The Ups truck delivers packages. Both transport packages.

The Mitochondria is like the digestive system. It provides energy for the cell. The are the power centers
of the cell. They are about the size of a bacteria. They provide for the rest of the organ or cell. Both are
powerhouses.

The Plasma Membrane is like a security guard. The plasma membrane is compatible with water. It has
two layers. It controls the flow with hidden tails. This is an important part of the cell. It control what
goes in.

The cytoplasm is like jello salad. It is mostly water. It is full of proteins. Controls cell metabolism. It holds
everything together. Suspends the cells organs like fruit chunks in jello salad.

The Vacuole is like a refrigerator. They are large in plant cells and small in animal cells. Store all matter
for the cell. Regulates pressure in the cell. A refrigerator holds items for the home. The vacuole holds
items for the cell.

The Cytoskeleton is like the beams of a house. It holds the cells structure. The muscle fiber contraction
could not take place without the cytoskeleton. It comprises of three primary protein filaments.
Cytoskeleton holds everything together. Like the beams of a house it also holds everything together.

The Endoplasmic Reticulum is like a highway. It moves everything around the cell. It has ribosomes on its
walls. It appears pebbled on the microscope. It is very important to the function of the cell. It moves
materials like highways move us throughout the country.

The Lysosome is like a stomach. In white cells they eat bacteria. They destroy bacteria and break down
unwanted contents of the cell. Uncontrolled release of lysosome contents into the cytoplasm can also
cause death. The lysosome is like the stomach and its acid. They both break down material.

The ribosome is like a factory. Ribosomes are packets of RNA and protein play a crucial role in
prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. They are the site of protein synthesis. Each ribosome is made of two
parts. It makes protein. Just like a factory would make any product.
