This photo essay documents the author's experience getting her first dog, a goldendoodle puppy named Ringo, on a spontaneous visit to a breeder. While Ringo has become a beloved pet, the author reflects that she wishes her family had adopted from a shelter instead, to give a homeless dog a loving home. FLASH MEMIOR

ADAPTATION
BY CYNTHIA GARCIA
A photo essay
When I was 16 years old I got
my first dog. It was a winter
night in my sophomore year
of high school and I
remember going to see this
dog in herriman. Our family
had been wanting a dog for
some time now and we were
just checking around the
area for dogs we might
want. This night was
different though because we
left with one.
I remember going in the house to see the puppies and there he
was. A little boy and he was tiny. He was a little
goldendoodle with big brown eyes and crazy long eyelashes
the color of honey. I was the first to hold him and he didn’t
want to let go. He was in my arms for almost a half hour. Did
my arm get tired? Yes. Did I care? No. He was perfect and my
family could see it, so he ended up Coming home with us.
We had no supplies and no food so we went to a pet smart across the street and
bought whatever we thought we needed. The first night was a total dream. He
immediately warmed up to the new house and already wanted to explore. He
super through the night and the next day we went to Walmart and PetSmart
again and did a bit more research on what we needed. When I told my friends I
got a dog they didn’t believe me. It was on a total whim and we just got him out
of nowhere.
For my family it was very unlikely My dog ringo is a purebred dog. We
to own a dog because our landlord didn’t adopt him and I wish we had
didn’t allow us to have one. Now we looked before we went all in. Don’t
have had him for about four years get me wrong, I love my dog and
now. But I wonder what would have I’m obsessed with him, but if we
happened if we went to a shelter to had adopted him I feel like I would
adopt a dog. be doing a dog a favor. Like saving
them from something worse.
Shelters in Utah are limited and usually full,( more about shelter
life)Tons and tons of dogs waiting for homes. And it’s not even just
dogs. There are a ton of cats as well. If I could adopt them all I would
and you bet I would make them live like princesses and princes. Ringo
is the best dog ever though and I wouldn’t have it any other way. He
was just the dog for us. When I do get another dog, I will be going to
shelters to see if there are any dogs in need of a great home, which
there is always plenty. For now ringo is just right for myself and my
family.
