Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, commonly known as Raphael, was an Italian painter and architect of the High

Renaissance. He was born on April 6, 1483, in Urbino, Italy, and died on April 6, 1520, in Rome. Raphael is considered
one of the greatest artists in the history of Western art, alongside Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Raphael is
considered one of the three great masters of the High Renaissance.

Raphael's art is characterized by its harmony, balance, and grace. He is known for his exceptional skills in achieving
linear and atmospheric perspective in his paintings and for his mastery of color and composition.

Some of his most famous works include "The School of Athens," "The Sistine Madonna," "The Madonna of the
Chair," and "The Transfiguration." These paintings are celebrated for their beauty and the way they exemplify the

His works, such as "The School of Athens," demonstrate a deep understanding of spatial relationships and
architectural accuracy. He excelled in creating idealized depictions of human figures, often emphasizing classical
proportions and harmonious compositions.

Raphael's early work was influenced by his apprenticeship with the renowned artist Perugino. He later developed his
own distinct style, which combined elements from other prominent Renaissance artists like Leonardo da Vinci and
Michelangelo.

Raphael was commissioned by Pope Julius II to paint the Stanza della Segnatura, a set of four rooms in the Vatican
that he decorated with frescoes. "The School of Athens" is one of the most famous frescoes from this series.

In addition to painting, Raphael was also an accomplished architect. He designed many architectural projects in
Rome, including St. Peter's Basilica and the Villa Farnesina.

Tragically, Raphael's life was cut short when he died at the age of 37, likely due to a fever. Despite his relatively short
life, his impact on the art world was profound.
Raphael's work continues to be studied and admired for its timeless beauty and influence on subsequent
generations of artists. He is often regarded as one of the three great masters of the High Renaissance, alongside
Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo.

Raphael's work, which exemplified the intellectual and artistic ideals of the High Renaissance, had a profound
influence on the development of Western art. His legacy continues to be celebrated, and he remains one of the most
revered artists in the history of art.
