SLIP, TRIP & FALL INJURY:
Every single year slip, trip, and fall injuries are some of the most common and costly injuries that occur in the
workplace. Slips, trips, and falls are one of the leading causes of injuries and fatalities in the workplace. According to
OSHA, slip, trip, and fall incidents cause 15% of all accidental deaths and are second only to motor vehicle incidents as a
cause of fatalities on the job. These types of incidents can result in life-changing injuries to the employees who suffer
them.
Some common slip, trip, and fall injuries include:
Broken bones
Cuts
Strains
Sprains
Back injury
Traumatic brain injuries
Causes of Slips, Trips, and Falls
Recognizing and addressing the hazards that cause these incidents should be a focus in the workplace. Some
common causes of slips, trips, and falls injuries include:
Wet or oily surface
Hoses on the ground
Walking surfaces that are not level
Obstructed views
Poor lighting conditions
Clutter
Uncovered wires and cables
Shadows
Excessive dust
Noise
Temperature extremes
Distractive work environment
Improper or damaged footwear
Preventing Slips, Trips, and Falls
There are ways that you can help prevent slips, trips, and falls, and keep your worksite safer for you and your
coworkers. One simple way is to practice good housekeeping, clean up as you go. Other ways include wearing slip-
resistant shoes, being careful when walking on uneven surfaces as well as surfaces that are wet.
Best Practices to Eliminate Slips, Trips, and Falls Incidents from Occurring.
Eliminate as many Slips, Trips, and Falls hazards through proper housekeeping and work area setup. Poor
housekeeping leads to the majority of these hazards in most workplaces.
Keep walkways and paths clear of chicken fats, oils, materials, etc. to reduce these incidents conditions.
Ensure that you have proper footwear for your work and that it is in good condition.
Ensure there is proper lighting in work areas and that any changes in elevation are brightly marked.
Do not be distracted when walking through work areas.
Take smaller steps or shuffle your feet when there are slippery conditions present that you cannot avoid. Taking
larger steps can lead to your balance being thrown off.
What to Do If Injured?
If you are injured on the job site, you should report your injury to your supervisor immediately. While some slips,
trips, and falls may seem minor at first it is always better to get fully checked out. Sprains and strains to your legs, ankles,
and back are common with falls on a worksite. Broken bones are also common and need to be treated as soon as possible.
