Introduction
Learning strategies are a learner’s way to enhance their ability to retain any
information, improve their comprehension of subject matter, and increase their
possibility of achieving educational goals. According to Muelas and Navarro (2015)
learning strategies can be a remedial solution for low student achievement, and they
illustrated how to exploit brain competencies through learning strategies to improve
academic achievement. These strategies have an effect on everyone, especially
students, as they serve as partners in learning during fully face-to-face classes. As the
school year 2023-2024 has already started, learning strategies are essential for
adequately analyzing every subject. This is because students often struggle to adjust to
the new school year and are still getting used to it. It helps them to handle the difficulties
of the new school year efficiently, reducing feelings of being overwhelmed and
increasing productivity.
Brainstorming is a strategy used to generate new ideas or build on existing ones.
It allows students to share their perspectives and insights on a given topic. This idea
exposes students to different points of view, which enables them to gain an improved
comprehension of the subject. It encourages students to think outside the box and
experiment with new ideas and solutions; thus, this strategy stimulates students'
imagination and helps them develop their skills for academic challenges.
Highlighting is a strategy students use to mark or underline important information
in their study materials, such as textbooks or lecture notes. By highlighting important
parts, students may be more likely to engage with the material and retain the highlighted
information. It allows students to quickly locate and revisit important details when
studying or preparing for tests.
Note-taking is an essential learning strategy in which important information is
noted and written down during lectures, presentations, or while reading study materials.
This strategy helps students identify relationships between ideas, create structures, and
connect them. Notes act as a guide for studying or reviewing, making it easier to figure
out complex concepts and improve recall during tests, tasks, or class hours.
Academic performance serves as an important measure of a student's
educational progress and achievement, providing insights into their abilities, strengths,
and areas for improvement. According to Agoestina Mappadang et al,. (2022), it
becomes one of the key factor in determining students’ success in their future careers.
This includes performance tasks, written work, and quarterly exams. A performance
task is a learning task in which students demonstrate their knowledge, understanding,
and skills through project-based work. Written works are tasks that are shown in the
form of writing. It may include research papers, literary analyses, lab reports, reflective
essays, creative writing pieces, argumentative essays, and other types of tasks. A
quarterly exam is a test to find out the progress of the student's comprehension in every
subject.
Age refers to the developmental stage of students. It is an important factor to
consider when selecting and implementing appropriate learning strategies. Younger
students may require additional guidance and repetition, whereas older students may
be ready for more advanced concepts and opportunities for independent learning.
When discussing learning strategies, grade levels should be selecting the most
appropriate and effective for students at a particular stage of their education. Educators
can provide targeted instruction that meets the unique needs and abilities of students at
each stage of their academic journey by tailoring learning strategies to the specific
grade level. This strategy maximizes the effectiveness of the strategies while also
promoting students' overall learning and achievement.
The general weighted average, or GWA, is an average of the overall scholastic
standing of students in a specific period, such as a semester or an academic year. It is
used to determine the academic performance of the students, whether they passed or
failed. A General Weighted Average is commonly used for leveling or computing the
average number of amounts in an information set. It is often used as a basis for
academic recognition, such as honor rolls or graduation honors.
Learning strategies are essential skills that students use when exploring
education, from learning challenging topics to preparing for tests. Restructuring refers to
developing an excessively rigid or detailed approach to learning and acquiring
knowledge. Students become too reliant on predefined strategies and lose their ability
to adjust and come up with inventive solutions to challenging academic problems.

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of learning strategies for students,
the differences in the use of learning strategies, how students’ academic performance
can be improved with the help of these strategies, and how truly efficient they are,
particularly in the setting within LCC Silvercrest Junior High School. This research is
intended to increase awareness of this problem within the educational setting by
determining the aims of this study. Furthermore, the purpose of this study is to
emphasize the significance of employing learning strategies to achieve higher academic
achievement while maintaining free conflict on the school premises. Students will
encourage the development of their knowledge by promoting awareness, methods of
use, and identifying appropriate strategies in this study. As a result, this research is
critical to addressing learning strategies and its effects on students’ academic
performance.
Statement of The Problem
In the academic year 2023-2024, this study seeks to figure out the effects of
learning strategies to the academic performance of selected LCC Silvercrest Junior
High School students and will specifically search for answers to the following questions:
1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents according to:
1.1. Age
1.2. Grade Level
1.3. GWA
2. What are the different learning strategies according to the LCC Silvercrest
Junior High School students?
3. To what extent does the effect of Learning Strategies be described in terms of:
3.1. Performance Task
3.2. Written works
3.3. Quarterly Exams
4. Is there any significant relationship between the usage of the Learning
strategies and the JHS student academic performance?
5. What approaches can be done to improve the learning strategies for the
students' academic performance?
Hypothesis
1. The usage of learning strategies does not have an effect on the academic
performance of the JHS students.
2. The usage of learning strategies does have an effect on the academic
performance of the JHS students.
Variables of the study
