As a someone who is very passionate about writing, storytelling, arguing, and other forms
of this art, I am excited to present my writing portfolio. This portfolio is what I believe to be
some of my best work. It has a range of work from my various college classes from current and
previous years. I believe this collection gives a good idea of who I am and some things I am
passionate about. This collection represents my dedication to writing while providing thought-
provoking work across different platforms.
Each writing piece to me is different while still maintaining a same theme, they all give
you sense of who I am and what my strengths and weaknesses are. My first artifact is about
belief and what that means to me. This was written for a quiz, but I am very proud of it. It talks
about kindness, equality and taking care of one’s mental health. I chose these specific topics for
this theme because these are qualities that matter to me. Artifact 2 is about technology and how it
has helped make certain tasks in life easier. I chose this piece as it shows the argumentative side
of my writing. While others argue that technology has made the younger generation lazy, I argue
how technology has been beneficial to those who live busy lives. In the article, certain points are
made about how technology has helped companies improve on statistics and finding employees
with the qualifications needed for certain jobs.
These next 2 artifacts on very meaningful to me. They explain a certain community I’m
passionate about helping and explains how hard working and dedicated I am as an employee.
Artifacts 3 is a community service initiative I wrote this year for this Miss NOC pageant. This
writing is about providing low cost or no cost transportation for cancer patients to make their
medical appointments. I explain in this work how this initiative could be a reality with the help
of community involvement, fundraising campaigns and gaining the help of taxi services. I chose
to write this as I have watched my father struggle with cancer and the issue of making his
medical appointments. This is thee writing that means the most to me emotionally. Lastly, artifact
3 is a interview paper I wrote for my digital and financial literacy class. I chose this writing as I
believe it gives the best sense of who I am as a person and a worker. This work means a lot to me
as it shows not only my strengths as a writer and the ability to answer questions professionally,
but it shows how passionate I can be when it comes to a job and that I can be a wonderful asset
to any team.
Within the pages of this portfolio, you’ll see not only my work but also the evolution
process of my literally journey. Each piece shows how I have grown as a writer and certain
improvements I have made in 2 years. With the help of my English teacher, I gave improved on
my comma placement. In the recent years I’ve explored more literally work and languages that
has helped me improve my writing and reading skills immensely. To me, these pieces serve as a
milestone, marking my progress as a writer and how my ideas have evolved over a certain period
of time. Writing has also help me build my own voice and teach me that its okay to have your
own opinions on specific topics.
My writing process used to consist of really thinking about what I’m going to write about
for sometimes weeks, but once I have an idea of what I’m writing, I sometimes cannot stop. If
it’s a topic I am very educated on or a topic I enjoy. Now, I believe my writing process consist
more of writing until something clicks. I have realized over recent years that thinking to long
about the topic will do more harm than good. To me, when I think to long on the topic, I forget
what the topic is, I start to get distracted to the side topics or arguments of it or might start
thinking about what other people may think. At that point I get burned out and can’t write
anymore. I find sitting down and immediately writing the first thing that comes to mind, what
I’m going to write comes to mine much more easily and I find my work to be more legible and
more interesting. If I were to have a writing toolbox, I would include a versatile vocabulary.
While this is something I need more work on, a versatile vocabulary helps a reader paint vivid
imagery and help capture more emotions within the work. A network of feedback would also be
something I include. Its important to always have someone overlook your work to get more of an
outsider’s perspective while also getting some constructive criticism and support.
My journey as a writer has had its challenges but, in the end, I know I have
evolved into a stronger writer and have learned certain tricks and ideas to make my writing even
better in the future. Some of my strengths lies in being able to fully immerse myself in various
writing styles and adapt to whatever topic is given to me. This flexibility has allowed me to
experiment with different genres and refine my ability in storytelling. A weakness for me is
finding the balance between details. Sometimes I find myself trying to navigate through a world
of words which I know has made some of my work harder to understand for readers. Another
weakness is while I always appreciate constructive criticism, I can be quite meticulous about my
writing which can sometimes cause my writing to be not the best it can be.
Honestly, I’m not sure what is next, but I am always excited for something new. My hope
is to continue to improve my writing continue to write for the rest of my life. I hope to write
more argumentative work as I’m someone who just likes to argue in both writing and real life.
(ha-ha) I also hope to write more on my community service initiative, I want my next piece to be
about how I made the initiative a reality in honor of my father’s cancer battle and the people I
helped and who helped me achieve that goal. As of right now, I am not prepared. I still have
thousands of things to learn and a few years to go before I need to be prepared. I know with the
help of my professors, friends, family, and others, I will achieve the things I want to achieve both
in literacy and real life, it just takes hard work and a lot of reading,
Reflecting on my journey as a writer, I’ve discovered strengths I didn’t believe I had such
as being able to adapt to different writing styles and learning to be more open with feedback.
Though some of my weaknesses such as finding a fine line between words and occasionally
having an issue with feedback, these are things I will work on and not ignore these areas I
struggle with but embrace them for more growth that will shape me into a more resilient and
adaptable writer. Thank you, Mrs. Davis for dedicating time to review my portfolio. I value you
your opinion and love for the opportunity to further discuss my work and explore ways to
improve it even more.
