● The literal meaning behind the word


“Spoliarium” is the basement of the
roman colosseum wherein fallen
gladiators were brought into to be
dumped and be devoid of their
belongings. It is a historical painting
that was created in 1884 as an entry to
the prestigious Exposicion de Bellas
Artes and eventually won for Luna his
First Gold Medal. Moreover, its
creation during the Spanish occupation
portrays the dark air in that age as well
as the countless deaths of Filipinos.

injustices and prejudice. It is a complex

depth of human experience with a sense of
tension and struggle.

way of showing how cruel and evil the Spanish
era in the Philippines was. Making us people
of the modern generation imagine the

Ang Huling El Bimbo

The musical entitled “Ang Huling El Bimbo”


embodies the hard truths of life that most
people our age can relate to. Through the
varied experiences of each character,
audiences were able to immerse themselves
in the different pathways or possibilities as we
move on from being free-spirited youths to
adults with responsibilities. It is definitely a
hard truth because growing up is inevitable.

This musical depicts the story of some


women in the early years in the Philippines.
Being objectified by men and their future
being robbed. It is an art that expresses
reality in a way that can be watched and
shared to others.

The painting, Spoliarium, serves as a lens to
the general audience to be able to visualize the
suffering of the Filipino people during the
Spanish Regime. Apart from this, it depicts the
historical significance and artistic achievement
of the artwork as a way to convey the stories,
emotions, and raw reminder of our enduring
fight for justice and independence. More so, it
enables one to empathize with the artwork
itself and imagine the challenge faced by the
Filipino people. Therefore, it enriches one’s
experience and provides an opportunity for an
individual to nect to his roots and rich history.

The significance of this musical is for the


people to know the sufferings of not only
women but the people who are experiencing
injustice in our society. This musical serves as
an art to spread the untold stories of those
ordinary people who have suffered the
unforgiving doings of this cruel world.
Furthermore, this art plays a huge role in
making sense of this world by broadening the
experience of viewers through transporting
them to different places.
