HOW CAN NATIVE AMERICANS RECLAIM THEIR PLACE IN AMERICAN HISTORY?


TASK #1: WRITTEN EXPRESSION

You are a Native American person, who is a part of the Not in Our Honor Coalition. You have
decided to write a letter to the owners of a sports team or to the head of a school or university,
which uses Indian imagery as their logo or mascot or use names related to Native Americans (for
example the Chicago Blackhawks (ice hockey team), the Atlanta Braves (baseball team) or the
Florida State Seminoles (university basketball and football team) for example. You are requiring
them to stop using any Native American connotations in their names and or imagery.

Explain why you are writing: the use of Native Americans names and imagery, why it is
unacceptable for Native American people, and why it would be a good idea to change their name
or logo. Make suggestions to make it more acceptable and not offensive to anyone (about 200
words).

Be clear and convincing. Don’t forget to make paragraphs and to organize your letter.
