Read the passage below and answer questions 71 to 80. (20 marks)

Ramona peeked through the gaps of the bookshelves nervously. She could
see Mrs Goh, the librarian, at the counter. Mrs Goh was typing vigorously on the
keyboard, furrowing her eyebrows whenever she paused to stare at the screen.
With a permanent frown on her face, she was feared by all the pupils. Ramona
herself had been chided numerous times by her for running or talking too loudly in 5
the library. Hesitantly, Ramona made her way towards Mrs Goh.
Ramona stood in front of the counter and cleared her throat. The typing did
not stop, so she coughed loudly. That did the trick. Mrs Goh peered at Ramona.
As silence filled the air, Ramona realised that Mrs Goh was waiting for her to begin
talking. Ramona explained that she had been assigned to help out at the library for 10
a month as a consequence of vandalising some books.
“Follow me,” replied Mrs Goh and she led Ramona into a small room next to
the counter. She gestured to four large boxes in a corner and said, “These are
books with torn pages. Tape the torn pages up neatly.” With that, she closed the
door and strode away. Ramona looked at the boxes in dismay. “How am I going to 15
finish fixing these books single-handedly within a month?” she cried.
Reluctantly, Ramona began the routine. She turned up at the library after
school every day, shut herself in the room and took her time to fix the torn pages in
the books. One afternoon, Ramona noticed a ‘discarded’ label on one of the books.
“A discarded book?” Ramona wondered aloud. She flipped through a few other 20
books and noticed the same label on them. Then, the realisation hit her. She had
wasted almost two weeks fixing books that were going to be disposed of. She had
had enough. She marched over to Mrs Goh immediately.
“Mrs Goh?” Ramona began. “Why did you make me fix discarded books?
I’ve been spending nearly two hours every day taping the torn pages. It was all an 25
utter waste of time!”
Mrs Goh looked up at Ramona whose eyes had now welled up with tears.
Calmly, she shared, “What do you think happened to the four books you
vandalised? Missing pages, scribbles, drawings…no one will be able to borrow or
enjoy them now. You are just one of many inconsiderate children. Besides taking 30
responsibility for your actions, I really want you to treat books with respect.”
Ramona hung her head in shame. Mrs Goh was right. In a moment of
mischief, she had failed to realise the repercussions of her actions and now truly
felt sorry for what she had done. She apologised meekly to Mrs Goh. Mrs Goh
accepted her apology and added, “Your efforts will not go to waste. These 35
damaged books that you’ve fixed will be sold at our annual book fair. Fortunately,
we still have book lovers who will look past a torn page or two.” That instantly
brought a smile to Ramona’s face. Ramona made a promise. Never again would
she damage another book.
