Coating Inspection Process

The document outlines the steps for coating a surface, including: 1. Preparing the surface through cleaning methods like solvent cleaning, hand tool cleaning, power tool cleaning, or abrasive blasting to remove contaminants and rust. This includes assessing the condition of the surface. 2. Inspecting the surface after preparation to check the cleanliness, surface profile, and for remaining contaminants. 3. Inspecting again before coating to ensure the coating materials are suitable and application equipment is ready. 4. Applying the coating and inspecting during application to ensure proper thickness, holidays, adhesion and curing.

Coating Process

1. Surface Preparation
a. Pre assessment
 Determining work volume, time range, cost needed
 Determining method ofsurface preparation
 Degree of rust assessment
 New steel
o SSPC-Vis1 (4 conditions, A=mill scale -> D=Rust)
o ISO 8501-1:1998 (4 conditions, A=mill scale ->D=Rust)
 Recoating steel
o SSPC-Vis1 (3 conditions, G=Mill scale bearing steel, system
thoroughly weathered, thoroughly stained, thoroughly
blistered; S=Spot rusting in few localized area; P=Pinpoint
rusting (very small speck of rust) distributed across surface)
o ASTM D610
o ISO 4628-3
 Painted steel = SSPC-Vis2 : Standard Method of Evaluating Degree of
Rusting on Painted Steel Surfaces
 Identifying contaminants (grease, oil, dirt, cement splatter, mill scale, etc)
 SSPC-SP1
 Identify defect on the material design – NACE RP 0178 (trapped water,
unreached area, bolt/nut, tumpang tindih pd sambungan, corners, 2
different metals, sharp edges) or fabrication imperfection (weld spatter, skip
weld, rough weld, porosity, lamination)
b. Initial cleaning
 Removal of contaminant
o Solvent cleaning - SSPC-SP1 (chemical stripper, detergent,
steam, emulsion/alkaline cleaner)
o Hand tool cleaning
 SSPC-SP2
 ISO 8501-1 St2 (thorough hand & power tool cleaning)
 ISO 8501-1:1988
 SSPC Vis3
 Unpainted: A-D
 Previously painted: E (light colored paint over
blast cleaned surface, paint mostly intact), F
(zinc rich paint over blast cleaned, paint mostly
intact), G (paint system over mill scale bearing
steel, system thoroughly weathered)
o Power tool cleaning
 SSPC-SP3
 ISO 8501-1 St3 (very thorough han & power tool
cleaning)
 SSPC Vis3
o Power tool cleaning to bare metal
 SSPC-SP11
 SSPC Vis3
o Acid pickling
 SSPC-SP8
o Site prepraration (equipment, tools, inspection route)
o Abrasive inspection (cleanliness, sizes)
o Degree of rust on surface
o Coating compatibility (test patch application)
 SSPC-TU3 : Overcoating
 ASTM D5064 : Practice for Conducting a Patch Test to Assess Coating
Compatibility
o Blasting equipment check
- Post- surface preparation inspection
o Degree of cleanliness
o Surface profile
o Contaminants
- Pre-coating inspection
o Paint storage, mixing and thining
o Viscocity
o Familiarize on the paint manufacturer’s coating application instruction
o Painting application equipment check
- Coating application inspection
o Induction time and pot life
o Wet
o Dry film thickness SSPC-PA2
o Holiday test
o Adhesion and curing test
