How To Boil Water
By Blake Lange
In contemporary developed countries, clean drinking water is so prevalent that we rarely think
about it. But countless others in less developed countries aren’t as fortunate. According to the
Center for Disease Control, if you don’t have safe bottled water, you should boil your water to
make it safe to drink. Boiling is the surest method to kill disease-causing germs, including
viruses, bacteria, and parasites. Instructions are listed below this paragraph to explain how to
boil water.

Water
Heat source capable of boiling water (sStove, fire, etc.)
Metal container to boil water in (DO NOT use a plastic container to boil water)

Clean, sanitized containers to store boiled water
Steps for Boiling Water
**If the water is cloudy, first filter it through a clean cloth, paper towel, or coffee filter OR allow it
to settle. Then, draw off the clear water and follow the steps below.**
1. Fill metal container with water. Then, place metal container on heat source.
2. Bring the clear water to a rolling boil for 1 minute (at elevations above 6,500 feet, boil for
3 minutes).
3.[2.] Let the boiled water cool (when the water can no longer burn your skin or mouth).
4.[3.] Store your boiled water in clean sanitized containers with tight covers.
