ABSTRACT

Poetry is a variety of literature whose language is bound by rhythm, dimension, rhyme, and
the arrangement of lines and stanzas. Poetry is also defined as a composition in a language
whose form is chosen and arranged in a way. Poetry is divided into two, old poetry and new
poetry. Characteristics of old poetry: The name of the author is unknown. It is oral literature
because it is conveyed by word of mouth. Very bound by rules, such as the number of lines
per stanza, the number of syllables or rhymes. New Poetry Unlike the old poetry, the new
poetry is poetry that is no longer bound by rules, and its form is freer than the old poetry in
terms of the number of lines, syllables, or rhymes. New poetry features: Has a neat,
symmetrical shape. Regular ending rhyme. Using rhyme and rhyme patterns even with other
patterns.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the study

English is an international language used to communicate around the world. There are even
some countries that make English the official language or the main language. As we know
English is very important and needed in our lives today. Reported by Encyclopaedia
Britannica (2015), English originating from England is the dominant language in most
countries in the world. This time, a mini research in English with material on translating
poetry using the word-for-word translation method. The poem we took was entitled “The
Beauty of Nature in this Country” by (Ronny Maharianto).

1.2 Problem of research

Word for word translation is a sequential translation method, this method maintains the
wording of the source, but this translation can cause different meanings if translated literally.

1.3 The objective of study

This study aims to find out how a language is translated by word for word translation.

1.4 The Significance of study

The researcher hopes that the results of this study can be used as a reference for readers to get
to know the research using the word-for-word translation method.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE
THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK

2.1. Theoritical Fromwork

In this chapter the theories and methods used are interrelated. The theory used is Word for
Word translation whose method is very suitable for use in poetry and novel texts.
1.In this study, the researcher chose Word for Word translation technique to translate the
poem of independence day
2.We chose this technique because its purpose is very suitable for translating poetry and
novels.

2.2. Word For Word Translation

1. Definition of word for word Translation

Word for word translation is a type of translation which is basically still very much tied to
the word level (Catford, 1974:25). In other words, word-for-word translation is a type of
translation that only transfers the contents of the source language text directly into the
target language word for word without changing the wording of the source language into
the target language.

Example: “Mujhe yeh karna hee nahin” means “I really don't want to do this.” In
this case, the word “hee” means “really.”

2. Techniques of Word for word Translation

This type of method an interlinear translation system is usually used, where the words
from the target translation (TT) are directly placed under the translated version of the
source (ST). This translation method is tied to the word level, so the word order is highly
preserved. By only looking for the equivalent source language (SL) in the target language
(TL), the word order in the translated sentence is exactly the same as the word order in
the source sentence. Generally, this method is used at the pre-translation stage when the
translator translates difficult texts or to understand the mechanism of the source language
(SL), so it is not common when used in general translation.

CHAPTER III
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3.1 Time And Location Of The Study

1. Time

Thursday, October 13, 2022( 10.00 WIB)

2. Location
The research was conducted at STKIP (Teacher College of Education) BUDIDAYA BINJAI Jl.
Gaharu No. 147, Jatimakmur, Binjai Utara, Jati Makmur, Kec. Binjai, Kota Binjai, Sumatera Utara
20746.

3.2 Data Type And Source

1. Data type
The type of data analysis used by researchers in conducting this mini-research is a
qualitative method. Is a method that discusses the concept of a problem and does not
involve data in the form of numbers.
The reason the researcher chose this qualitative method was because the researcher
wanted to reveal the meaning of the poem of INDEPENDENCE DAY by Sapardi Djoko
Damono.
2. Source

Translator collects Word for Word Translation data. The Word for Word Translation
method is often used by students, because students try to quickly translate the meaning of
the source language into the target language.

3.3 Data Analysis

The qualitative data analysis technique was carried out in accordance with a case study
approach, so that the data analysis used was by comparing words and poems, the answer
to the approach to qualitative data was through observation and recording.

CHAPTER IV
RESULT AND DISCUSSION

Hari kemerdekaan

Akhirnya tak terlawan olehku

tumpah dimataku, dimata sahabat-sahabatku
ke hati kita semua
bendera-bendera dan bendera-bendera

bendera kebangsaanku
aku menyerah kepada kebanggan lembut

tergenggam satu hal dan kukenal

Tanah dimana kuberpijak berderak

awan bertebaran saling memburu

angin meniupkan kehangatan bertanah air

semat getir yang menikam berkali makin samar
mencapai puncak kepecahnya bunga api
pecahnya kehidupan kegirangan

Menjelang subuh aku sendiri

jauh dari tumpahan keriangan dilembah

memandangi tepian laut

tetapi aku menggengam yang lebih berharga

dalam kelam kulihat wajah kebangsaanku

10
makin bercahaya makin bercahaya dan fajar mulai kemerahan.
In English:
Independence Day

Finally no resistance from me

spilled in my eyes, in the eyes of my friends
to all of our hearts
flags and flags

my national flag
I surrender to the gentle nationality

understand one thing and I know

The ground I'm standing on crackles

scattered clouds chasing each other

the wind blows warm homeland

Even the bitter that stabs many times is getting dimmer
reach the top of the burst of sparks
happy life goodbye

At dawn I'm alone

away from the spilled joy in the valley

looking at the beach

but i hold the more valuable

in the dark i see the face of my nationality

the more shining the brighter and the dawn starting to turn red.
