lesson on past and past perfect tense. Let’s start our day with
a review our previous lesson.
1. Review
Now let us first have a review of our previous discussion
about passive and active voice.
Can someone from the class recall the definition of active
voice?

*Active voice is when the subject comes first before the verb
and the subject is doing the action of the sentence

What about Passive voice?

*Passive voice, the actions target is the focus, and the verbs
acts upon the subject.

review. Lets have a drill to measure if you really still know our

Let’s put our knowledge into practice. I will show a few
sentences on the board to identify which voice each sentence
is written in the board.
Sentence 1. The ball was thrown by John
(Job raise her hand)
Yes, Job?
Ma’am, that passive, because the subject “ball” is acted upon
by the verb “was thrown”
Very well said Job, you’ve answer the sentence perfectly.

Sentence 2. John throw the ball

Active Voice ma’am!
And why it is Active Voice?
Because the subject “John” performs the action describe by
the verb “threw”

Passive voice is the subject of the sentence is acted by the
verb, while the active voice is the subject of the sentence
performs the action describe by the verb.

be a nest topic.
1. Presentation of the Topic
Since you already have ideas on our topic today I’ll just give a
short presentation to our topic before I discuss.
The past and past perfect tense are the two important verb
tense in English that help us express action that started and
finished in the past. Now let’s start a discussion about our
topic.
2. Discussion
Now, let engage in a lively discussion about past and past
perfect tense
Hello everyone! Today we’re going to tackle about two
important verb tense in English
First, lets start with the past tense or simple past tense
What is past tense?
The past tense or simple tense is used to describe an action
or event that happen at a specific time in the past
These can be in terms of:
A. Event in the past that are now finished
B. Situation in the past
C. A series of action in the past
It’s formed by adding /d/ or /ed/ to the base form of regular
verb.
For regular verbs, add ed to the root form of the verb (or just
d if the root form already ends in an e) such as
Play – Played Listen – Listened
Type – Typed Walk – Walked
For example: I walked to school yesterday
For irregular verb thing get more complicated. The simple
past tense of some irregular verbs looks exactly like the root
form.
Example: put – put
cut – cut
set – set
For other irregular verb, including the verb to be, the simple
past form are the more erratic.
Such as: see – saw build – built
run – ran go - went
eat - ate
For example:
She ran a marathon last weekend
They ate dinner at a nice restaurant
Commonly, past tense or simple past tense is signaled by
time indicators in the past.
Example of time indicators: last week, yesterday, a year ago,
recently and this morning
For example: Pablo and Josh visited their brand mates
yesterday.

Now let’s move on to the past perfect tense, Past Perfect
tense is used to describe an action or event that happened
before another action or event in the past. Usually narrates
two (2) past action and events.
Example: By the time, I arrived they had already eaten
dinner.
had already – past perfect tense
arrived – simple past tense
Another example: She had finished her project before the
deadline.
had finished – past perfect tense
PAST PERFECT TENSE is form by using the word “had”+
past particle of the verb. It express activities that existed or
occurred before another activity in the past.
For example: Justine had eaten his breakfast before ken
asked him to do so
had eaten – past perfect tense
asked – simple past tense
Remember class, that there are time expression used in
indicating the past perfect tense.
Example of past perfect tense time expression:
After, as soon as, and the moment that until
Example of simple past tense time expression:
Before, when, and by the time
Examples: Stell had prayed the rosary by the time Jah
arrived.
had prayed – past perfect tense
arrived – simple perfect tense
Examples: After Jhen had finished the dress, Felip sold the
item.
Had finished – past perfect tense
Sold – simple perfect tense
