Introduction
Pipe cutting is often practiced with the right size. This is due to the design of a building or the
construction of a road that has been set. These pipe cuts are usually produced using tools
available in the workshop. Each pipe cutting must be done according to the type of pipe and the
tools to be used. The cutting work must be done carefully and accurately.
Objectives
At the end of this practical we know how to:
1.Provide the proper materials and equipment for pipe installation and connection work.
2.Use materials and equipment for installation and pipe connection work according to the correct
function.
3.Practice step by step about measuring, marking, cutting, and threading galvanized iron (GI)
pipes manually using pipe threader and wheel pipe cutter.
Safety precautions
While carrying out pipe installation and connection work in the laboratory, personal safety must
be taken care of to avoid accident in the laboratory. Here are the safety measures that need to be
followed in the laboratory:
Students are not allowed to enter the workshop without lecturer permission.
Students must adhere to the dress code while in the workshop.
Students must follow the correct method when using and operating equipment and
machines while at work.
Students must ensure that the equipment used is safe and report damages equipment.
Students are not allowed to play and making jokes with friends either with the equipment
in the workshop.

Procedures
Measuring and marking process
- Check the size of the galvanized iron pipe which are 2pcs for 300mm pipe and 3pcs for
200mm pipe. So total for G.I pipe that we used is 1200mm.
- Measure its length using measuring tape and used marker pen to mark on the pipe.
Cutting process
- Properly secure the G.I pipe in a yoke pipe vise and cut the pipe to the required length
using a single wheel cutter.
- Make sure the blade of the G.I cutter blade is at exactly at the marked point.
- Tighten and twist until the pipe breaks.
- Miser the G.I pipe to remove the burr on the inside of the pipe using a round and average
miser.
Threading process
- Secure the G.I pipe in a yoke pipe vise and thread the pipe to the proper length using stock
& dies.
- While doing the threading process make sure the arrow on the stock & dies is facing our
self.
- When the process of pushing the threaded pipe becomes difficult, place oil on the front
surface of the pipe and continue the threading process.
- To open the threaded pipe, aim the arrow outward.
- Turn the manual threaded pipe 360 degree and remove the threaded pipe.
- Miser the G.I pipe to remove the burr on the inside of the pipe using a round and average
miser.
Pipe jointing process
- To join the pipe into the designed, we need to use elbow sockets, tee sockets, and also
union coupling.
Conclusion
Pipe cutting work must be done accurately and correctly. This is to prevent defects in the pipes
that have been installed. In general, students must be profecient in operating tools and machines
to cut pipes so that no accidents occur. Therefore, cutting process must be done carefully and
neatly so that the cutting is done more neat and accurate.
