Required life
‘The lfe expectancy of bearings used in machine tools depends
‘on several varying factors and a definite rule cannot be applied. It
‘epends upon the kind of machine tool, whether iti. special
purpose machine working under constant working conditions oF
luniversal machine tool where the machining conditions, are
regularly varying, It also depends upon the position in which the
bearing is used and the ease with which it can be replaced. The life
‘expectancy of the bearing may coincide withthe life expectancy of
themachine or be only apart ot for example itmay be equal tothe
‘overhauling period decided by experience. However. the li
expectancy of a bearing used in machine tol working continuously
for 8 hours a day at constant load and speed is choosen between

20,000 to 30,000 hours. A value between 50,000 to 60,000 hours is
selected for machines working continuously all the 24 hours of the
ay.
Very often the bearings used in machine tols are subjected to
varying loads and work at varying speeds. In these circumstances, it
is necessary to make an estimate of equivalent required life which
will ultimately give the bearing a life expectancy as chosen above.
For this it s necessary to estimate from previous experience with
such machines the values of different loads that wil act and periods
asa percentage of total time these loads wil act. With this data the
expected life of bearing can be estimated as follows:

‘Static load carrying capacity
‘The static load carrying capacity ofa rolling bearing is the load
at which the permanent overall deformation of the rolling element
‘and raceway at the highly stressed point is 0.0001 of the rolling
element diameter.
‘Equivalent static bearing load
For bearings which are loaded statically, or when making only
‘very small rotations of oscillatory movements, the permissible
‘deformation is generally governed by the rated static capacity.
‘The equivalent static bearing load is defined as that constant
‘radial load, (axial load in case of thrust bearings) which, if applied,
‘would cause the same total deformation at the highly stressed
contact as the actual load.

‘When a bearing is loaded, its rings are displaced with respect to
cach other due to clastic deformation. The axil and radial elastic
{deformation ofthe bearings affect the rgiity ofthe spindle units a5,
