Fetal Circulation

The fetal circulation differs significantly from adult circulation. Oxygenated blood from the placenta enters the fetal heart through the umbilical vein and about 90% of the blood bypasses the lungs through the foramen ovale and ductus arteriosus to the systemic circulation. Only about 10-15% of the blood circulates through the lungs to oxygenate before returning to the heart and being pumped back to the placenta through the umbilical arteries. After birth, the ductus arteriosus and foramen ovale close, establishing the postnatal circulation.
