Text: Internet addiction
During the last two decades, the way we lived and the way we worked have changed
due to the development in the communication and information industries. The reason
behind it is the wide distribution of computers, whereby communication among
People takes place in virtual space better known as cyberspace. This cyberspace has
“ppcared as a new environment which is basically different from the real world we
live in, as it has linked people all over the world. Currently, there are approximately
8 billion people in the world having Internet access, The fastest growing group is the
category of adult aged 55 and above, while those in group 18-34 of age represent the
, Most active online users. |
Internet addiction is an impulse control disorder that does not involve the use of an
( iMtoxicating drug and itis very similar to pathological gambling. It is defined as a non-
chemical or behavioral addiction that involves human-machine interaction. In other
Words, internet addiction is defined as a maladaptive use of the internet that can lead
to social and functional disorders. Nowadays, individuals are getting hooked on the
internet such as pornography, internet gambling, online shopping, searching for non-
important information or chatting for a very long time. Working with the internet is
effective and productive and feeling more comfortable with online friends than real
ones, playing games online and also easy internet access to all mobile devices.
On the other hand, the internet brings the world so close together today, by its positive
aspects such as conducting research, performing business transactions and
communications, accessing library journals and communicating with social relations,
etc. unfortunately, the internet is misused by some groups of individuals that tend to
get obsessed, that is, they are constantly and permanently in front of a screen and
they can't help it. There are also various opinions on the internet addiction. As i
common saying, it is not an addiction if someone is addicted to knowledge and
information.

SECTION ONE: COMPREHENSION
Read the text and answer the questions below.
TEXT:
Climate changes have always been part of the Earth's history. However, in the past two centuries,
human populations have grown rapidly and this had led to an increased demand for energy and also for
land resources. An increase in the rate at which fossil fuels are bumed and the change in the way land and
other resources are used, is altering the Earth's balance of energy. Scientists believe that an increase in the
@mount of greenhouse gases, a change in the way land is used and an increase in sulphate aerosols and
black carbon are changing the climate on Earth,
Greenhouse in the atmosphere helps to make the Earth a habitable planet. The gases are natural
Part of the climate system and they help to keep the Earth warm. This is called the ‘greenhouse effect’
because the gases keep heat on the Earth in the same way as greenhouse does. Without the greenhouse
effect, the average temperature on Earth would be -18°C, rather than the present average of 15°C. Water
Vapour (H20) and carbon dioxide (CO2) are the two most important greenhouse gases.:The amount of
greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has risen over the past two hundred and fifty years. This is largely
due to the burning of fossil fuels for energy production. Gases from cattle farming, the cultivation of rice and
from landfills have also contributed to the increase.
Land-use changes when ecosystems are.changed and vegetation is either burned or removed, the
carbon stored in dioxide. The principal reasons for deforestation are agriculture and urban growth,
harvesting timber for fuel, construction and paper.
‘Sulphate aerosols enter the atmosphere naturally during volcanic eruptions and through the buming
of fossil fuels by big industries. Black carbon is generated from industrial pollution, traffic, outdoor fires and
buming of coal and biomass fuels. The carbon particles absorb sunlight, both heating the air and reducing
the amount of sunlight reaching the ground.

People die from air pollution worldwide, from both inside buildings and outside. It says new

equipment to cook food and heat their homes, *
Health officials say 4.2 million people die at an-early age in 2012 because of the burning
of coal and biomass fuels, such as wood, crop waste and animal wastes. They say 3.7 million i
others die in cities and rural areas because of outside air pollution.
Carlos Dora is the WHO's Public Health, Environmental and Social Determinants of Health
coordinator. He says countries must work together to reduce air pollution because what h
happens in one country can affect lives in another country. In addition, he says air pollution
was worse in developed countries than in developing ones. But he notes developed
countries, especially Britain and the United States have taken steps to greatly reduce air i
pollution during the past 10 years, since they are part of the largest producing greenhouse I
gas emissions countries with large companies, plants and ingfOstrial firms, [
