Concepts of Range and
Limits:
Law of Tolerance
Presented By:
JOHN PAUL B. ENRIQUEZ, LPT, MAEd
Assistant Professorial Lecturer 3
Objectives
At the end of the lesson, you must be able to:
a. Define law of tolerance
b. Cite examples of law of tolerance in an area.
c. Realize the importance of law of tolerance in
environmental and organismal survival and existence.

Concepts of Range and Limits
Discussion
Shelford’s Law of Tolerance
➢States that “the distribution of
each species is determined by its
range of tolerance to variation
in each environmental factor.”
➢It was developed by American
zoologist Victor Ernest Shelford
in 1911.
Discussion
➢the abundance or distribution
of an organism can be
controlled by certain factors
(e.g. the climatic, topographic,
and biological requirements of
plants and animals) where
levels of these exceed the
maximum or minimum limits of
tolerance of that organism.
Discussion
Discussion
➢The organism will survive if the
temperature, humidity, air and
other environmental factors are
within the optimum range.
➢There are upper and lower
limits to the physical factors an
organism can tolerate.
Discussion
Some supplementary to the law
of tolerance
➢ First, plants and animals may
have a wide range of tolerance
for one environmental factor
but relatively narrow range of
tolerance for another factor
➢Second, organisms with wide
ranges of tolerance for all actors
are likely to be most widely
distributed.
Discussion
Ex: Antarctic Fish (Trematomus bernacchii)
Discussion
Highlights
➢ Each organism has its own higher and lower limit of tolerance.
This capacity decides their distribution in environment.
➢As we emphasized, organisms are not just slaves to the physical
environment, they adapt themselves and modify the physical
environment so as to reduce the limiting effects of temperature,
light, water and other physical conditions of existence.
Activity
Floras and Faunas and their environment
1. Based on the concept of Law of Tolerance, cite examples of
organisms thriving in the given environment.
2. Cite possible environmental factors that tolerates or limits
organisms to survive.
3. Present output through a table.
