GPRS
(General Packet radio service)
General Packet Radio Service
(GPRS) - Background
• Data rate on GSM network is 9.6 Kbps.
• Data rate on GPRS is max of 20 Kbps per
timeslot. Data rate can be increased by using
more than one timeslot by a user.
• GSM Circuit switch data is normally billed on
time basis.
• GPRS packet switch data is normally billed on
volume basis.

GPRS Mobile
• Class A
– MS supports simultaneous operation of
GPRS and GSM services
• Class B
– MS able to register with the n/w for both
GPRS & GSM services simultaneously.
It can only use one of the two services
at a given time.
• Class C
- MS can attach for either GPRS or GSM
services
Conclusions FOR GPRS
• GPRS is a part in the transition from 2G to
3G
• With little cost & major benefits, GPRS
provides easy solution to ISPs
• Will pave the way for EDGE & UMTS
EDGE

Throughput highly depends on radio quality
• Measurement
MS measures the signal quality of
each received block.
• Report
MS reports the signal measurement
to PCU.
• Adaptation
PCU selects the accurate MCS
based on MS measurements.
