EDUCATION IN GREAT BRITAIN
In Great Britain children start going to school when they are 5 and continue studying until they are 16 or
older. Compulsory education begins at the age of 5 when children go to primary school. Primary education lasts
for 6 years. First they attend infant school from five to seven.
In infant school children don’t have real classes. They get acquainted with the classroom, desks, play
and learn through playing. They learn numbers and how to add them.
When the children are seven they go to junior school which they attend until eleven. Boys and girls
study at junior school for four years. There they have classes, read and write, do mathematics. Then they go to
secondary school.
There are some types of secondary school in Great Britain. They are grammar schools, modern schools
and comprehensive. One can attend modern school but students of a modern school don’t learn foreign
languages.
If they go to grammar school they will have a good secondary education. This type of school is the most
popular in England. At secondary school pupils study English, Mathematics, Science, Geography, History, Art,
Music, Foreign languages and Physical training (PT). English, Math, Science are called “core” subjects. Pupils

The text:

Once, I asked if I could go to a party on Saturday night which finished at 11:30 p.m. Conservative
as they were, my parents agreed, but on the condition that my dad came to pick me up at 10 p.m. I
argued and argued about it but in the end, I had to agree. I knew I was going to be really embarrassed
when my father came to pick me up, so I spent the whole party worrying. I didn’t speak to my parents
for three days after that. My mother tried to explain how they both felt, but I didn’t want to listen.

It was then that I decided to break the rules they had set down. So instead of coming home at 10
p.m, I would arrive at 11 p.m and then refuse to tell them where I had been.
I somehow felt that if I broke their rules, they would realise that I was old enough to
look after myself, and leave me alone.

However, the arguments got worse and worse, and the more they tried to keep me in the house,
the more pig-headed I got and the more I sneaked out.

Finally, one Saturday night I didn’t come home till 2 a.m. My father wanted to know why I was
so late. I refused to tell him. We had a huge argument which ended with me getting a taxi to my
sister’s house.

It's important for people to eat as much as they need to give them energy. If they eat too little food or the wrong
food they won't have enough energy. If they eat too much, they will need to make more exercise; otherwise they
will put on weight. When we eat the correct quantity of food for the exercise we take, we call this the energy
balance.
Fat is very high in calories, and so is no help at all in keeping energy balance. Fat has also been linked with heart
disease, and many experts believe that eating less would help to reduce it.
Sugar isn't good for the energy balance either. The only value of the diet is to provide energy, and you can get that
from other foods. There's no doubt that too much sugar makes you fat and it doesn't do your teeth much good
either.
Fibre, on the other hand is something that we eat too little of. One of the simplest ways of eating more fibre is to
eat more bread, particularly whole meal, granary, or high fibre bread .It's a good, cheap source of fibre and
nutrients without too many calories .Potatoes are good, too. Like bread, they are underrated, but they're excellent
for filling you up without making you fat, especially if you don't cover them with butter or fry them in fat.
So eat less fatty food (sweets, chocolate, cakes pudding, jam) and eat more fibre foods (bread, potatoes, pasta, fresh
fruit and vegetables).

Read the text below and do the activities below

Most human beings seem to be quite unaware that the small blue planet on which we live is very fragile. Despite
warnings, we continue to inflict irreversible damage on it.

The atmosphere, our water resources, the soil, even our food are all contaminated largely because of many human
actions. We create deserts and create floods by destroying our forests. Our homes and workplaces are polluted by tobacco
we smoke, by harmful particles from the materials we use and the emanation of toxic gases. We can no longer afford to
ignore the warnings we are given by scientists. If we don’t want to condemn our children to a life of peril, it is time for us
to reflect upon the consequences of our daily actions.

Nowadays, the quantity of polluting gases emitted into the atmosphere exceeds nature’s capacity to absorb them.
The equilibrium is broken and we are threatened by an ever lengthening list of perils including the green house effects, the
hole in the ozone layer, climatic change and a rise in the sea level.

Leisure and Entertainment
A-………………………………………………………………………………………………..
The British spend their free time in different ways. People generally use it to relax, but many people
also do voluntary work, especially for charities.
B……………………………………………………………………………………………………
A lot of free time is spent in the home, where the most popular leisure activity is watching television,
the average viewing time being 25 hours a week. People often record programs on video so that they can
watch later, and video recorders are also used for watching videos hired from a video rental shop.
C-……………………………………………………………………………………………………
Reading is also a favourite way of spending leisure time. The British spend a lot of time reading
newspapers and magazines.
D-………………………………………………………………………………………………
In the summer gardening is popular, and in winter it is often replaced by “do-it-yourself”, when people
spend their time improving or repairing their homes. Many people have pets to look after; taking the dog for a
daily walk is a regular routine.
E-……………………………………………………………………………………………………..
Some leisure activities are mostly or entirely social. Inviting friends for a drink or a meal at the pub is
the most usual one. Sometimes people join friends for a drink in a pub, or have dinner in a restaurant. A visit
to a pub often includes a game, for example billiards or darts.
F-…………………………………………………………………………………………………………
The extra leisure time available at weekends means that some leisure activities, many of them to do
with sport, normally take place only then. Traditional spectator sports include football, cricket, horse racing,
motor racing and motor cycle racing. Popular forms of exercise are swimming, tennis, ice-skating or roller
skating, cycling, climbing, and hill or country walking.
G-
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
Families often have a “day out” at the weekend, especially in summer, with a visit to a local event
such as a festival, fair or show. Young people especially go to clubs and discos, while people of all ages go to
the theatre, the cinema, art – exhibitions and concerts.
