RURAL POVERTY
Rural poverty refers to poverty in rural areas, including factors of rural society, rural economy and
political systems that give rise to the poverty found there (Murgai2002).Poverty remains a
predominantly rural problem, with a majority of the world 's poor live on rural areas(Stefan 2009).
(Nyathi 2017) shared the same sentiment that poverty is more pronounced in Zimbabwe rural areas
provided that approximately 70% of people in rural areas are poor .According to (Keijiro2009)three
quarters of those in poverty are in rural areas ,most of whom are small holders or agriculture workers
whose livelihood are heavily dependent on agriculture .lt is worth mentioning that 92% of the people
living in rural areas rely on agriculture and casual labour as the chief source of income Zimbabwe

Remedies
In the agriculture sector, the Zimbabwe land reform programme has aided the alleviation of poverty to
people without livelihoods and source of income. The introduction of Pfumvudza/intwasa scheme to
increase production, the goat poultry projects of 2002 to empower youths and presidential input and
command agriculture aids in the reduction of poverty in communities. Non-state Actors including Faith
Based Organisation have been key in promoting rural poverty alleviation by reaching the poorest of the
poor at grass roots level. There has been an implementation of projects such as small livestock rearing
Hwange and Bubi benefited
Education:The sector has introduced programmes like education for all and the Basic Education
Assistance Module (BEAM)which gives assistance to those who cannot afford to take children to school
thus reducing the literacy rate of the country. It also aims at reducing vulnerability and social protection
of orphans and vulnerable children.
The need to empower the once marginalised Zimbabwe is what led to the crafting of the Indigenization
and Economic Empowerment Act (chapter 14:33 of 2002).The indeginizationand Community Share
Ownership Trust is a noble idea which can take significant strides towards rural poverty alleviation. In
Tongogara ,the Trust has commenced the building of an entirely new school,Musasa primary, in ward
10 of Tongogara a mortuary and a maternity waiting room were constructed as a result of the
fund(Nyathi 2017).
