1.0 SCOPE:
This work instruction defines the method of carrying out the pickling &
passivation of stainless-steel equipment's.
2.0. OBIE!
For acid cleaning & neutralizing SS material/weld joints meant during
fabrication of vessels. This covers the surface treatment of austenitic
stainless steel. The basic purpose of this chemical treatment is to remove
films of oxide, scale, tampering colures & remnants of welding slag
which are formed during annealing of welding.

ASTM A380
4,0 _WORK INSTRUCTION:
4.1 Pre-treatment: Surface should be cleaned with brushing or grinding
to remove weldspatter & smooth out scratches & should be degreased to
remove oil & grease films.

One of the possible Pickled methods is described here.
Aqueous Pickling solution shall be as following:
-Nitric acid (Tech grade)-10to25% plus Hydrofluoric acid-1t08%(to be used only for stabilized SS
grades).Temperature 50to60 C for 10% Nitric acid and 20 C for 25% Nitric acid.when size and
shape of product permit, total immersion in the pickling solution is preferred. Where immersion i
impractical, pickling may be accomplished by wetting the surface by:
1, Swabbing or spraying
2. Partial filling the item with pickling solution and rotating or rocking so that the entire surfaces
receive the required chemical treatment.
-The maximum period for which the pickling solution sall be allowed to remain on the surface is 30
minute. During pickling removal of oxides may be hastened by brushing with a hard fiber or SS wire
brush. Over pickling shall be avoided.
-The pickling agent sall be washed off with plenty of water so as to leave no trace behind.
pickling and passivating agents
All SS material shall be Pickled&Passivated as Per following Procedures:
- Bath pickling is done by dipping parts in a pickling bath. It is used for pickling components of
different shapes and sizes; limitations include the tank size and handling equipment capacity,
and sometimes the shape of a component. Bath pickling is done using ANTOX 80 E.
-Paste pickling is done by applying pickling paste with a brush. It is suitable for
pickling welds and small parts. ANTOX 71 E and ANTOX 71 £ EXTRA pastes are used
for this method; ANTOX 3d is used for pickling polished components.
-Spray pickling is done by spraying a part with pickling gel, using either a special
application device or a simple bottle with a pump (see figure 2). This method is
usedfor vast areas. A colored indicator can be added to a pickling agent in order to
make it easier to distinguish the sprayed area from the unsprayed area. ANTOX 73 E,
ANTOX73 E PLUS, and ANTOX 73 E EXTRA gels are intended for spray pickling.

and made free from grease and oils.
4.2.3 ANTOX pickling paste is to be applied on the weld seam and the

then ANTOX pickling spray is to be sprayed on the surface to be cleaned
with a spray pump or a pressurized plastic spray bottle.

5.1 Surface treatment only to be performed by properly trained &
experienced personnel while observing the safety regulations such as usage
of gloves, masks & goggles while performing the operation.
5.2 Proper care shall be taken while handling this solution and direct
contact to the skin of the operator shall be avoided. In case if it happens,
the portion of skin shall
be cleaned with sufficient quantity of cold water.
5.3 Pickling agents contain nitric acid (HNO3) and hydrofluoric acid (HF).
That is why they are classified as caustic substances and poisons. Staff must
be instructed in HS rules and regulation. Special protective aids need to
be used. A face shield, rubber overallsand gloves are sufficient for paste
pickling. When spray or bath pickling is to be done, workers need to use a
face mask with a filter protecting against acidic vapors and a coveralll rubber
suit,
Pickling and passivation waste water is acidic and contains dissolved
metals form the base material. That is why it must be collected and
disposed of in an environmentally- friendly way.
