INTRODUCTION
Nature has been a source of medicinal treatments for
thousands of years, and plant-based system continues to
play an essential role in primary health care of 80% of
world’s population. Plants have been used as medicines
throughout history. Medicinal plants are widely and
successfully used on every continent. In Asia, the
practice of herbal medicine is extremely well
established and practised. Medicinal plants put a step
over. These plants possess therapeutic properties or
have beneficial effects on the human body. The
medicinal plants are useful in the treatment of common
ailments like relief from headache, indigestion problem
and even irritation from insect bites, etc. Use of natural
treatments result in fewer side effects rather than
suffering from hazardous diseases due to the side
effects caused due to other pharmaceuticals.
Medicinal herbs are known for their antimicrobial,
antibacterial, antiviral, immunomodulatory,
immunoboosting , and anti-inflammatory properties.
Medicinal plants play a very important role in this
modern era. According to modern history, many life-
threatening diseases were
cured by preparing pastes from roots, herbs, barks, and
different plants’ leaves. Scientists are still investigating
the potential of these plants to cure a variety of
medicinal issues, as many modern medications are
derived from chemicals found in plants. Many
people
now take medicinal plant products on a daily basis, to
maintain good health as much as to treat illness. In
some parts of the country the attitude towards herbal
medicine vary strongly. One reason for this is the
confusion between herbal medicine and witchcraft. The
use of medicinal plants is sometimes associated with
superstition, and therefore rejected by some people in
favour of western medicine. On the other hand, there
are millions of people who prefer traditional methods of
treatment. Many plants are used as medicine like bark
of the tree root, stem, flowers, fruits, leaves etc.
Medicinal plants therefore represent an important
opportunity to rural communities all over the world. In
some parts of the country, it acts as a source of
affordable medicine and as a source of income.
Governments too need to be thinking about how to
promote the benefits that medicinal plants have to offer,
which may involve integrating herbal medicine into
conventional healthcare systems. This raises important
issues, such as regulation of traditional healers and
ensuring certain standards are met. Therefore, medicinal
plants are a boon to humans.
AIM OF THE PROJECT
Study of diversity of medicinal plants and
importance in home remediation
METHODOLOGY
In this project we would be conducting a survey
with people living in city area and about the
different types of medicinal plants grown in their
home gardens and seen in nearby areas and their
specialities and uses. We also enquired about the
usage of medicinal plants by them for home
remediations.
Through the survey we got to know about the
attitude of the people residing in cities towards
medicinal plants and about their rate of usage.
We will be analysing the acquired data and then
based o the data arrive at a conclusion.
DIVERSITY OF
MEDICINAL
PLANTS
 Medicinal plants grown in home

 MEDICINAL PLANTS GROWN IN
DIFFERENT CLIMATIC CONDITIONS

Climate change is one of most severe threats to

biodiversity as well as to ecosystem functioning
the environmental factor that affect the growth of
medicinal plants include light, temperature, water,
humidity, nutrition.
Since plants are autotrophic organisms with
synthesis food using light energy in this way light
and temperature affect plant growth.
Soil moisture and air humidity for soil inhabiting
pathogens many, which causes plant diseases also
affect plant growth.
The medicinal plants grown in cold weather are
rosemary, sage, lavender, thyme etc.

 THREATENED SPECIES OF
MEDICINAL PLANTS
Human-induced activities such as overgrazing,
unorganized and over harvesting, habitat destruction
and climate change have led to rapid decline in the
populations of these medicinal plant species, leading to
their threatened status. Many medicinal plants having
important medicinal properties are being threatened. As
medicinal plants receive increased scientific and
commercial attention, there is increasing pressure on the
wild plant populations from which most medicinal
plants are harvested. The reasons for the endangerment
of medicinal plants are overharvesting, cultivation of
plants for home use and local markets, for making
medicinal products, etc.
Some of the threatened and endangered plant species
are: Saussaurea lappa, Picorrhiza kurroa, Ginkgo biloba,
Swertia chirata, Gymnema sylvestre, etc

 ADVERSE EFFECTS of medicinal plants
Medicinal plants cannot cure all the human diseases,
but only some. Herbal medications can mistakenly be
perceived as safe because they are natural products.
They may produce negative effects such as allergic
reactions, rashes, asthma, headaches, dizziness,
agitation, dry mouth, seizures, fatigue, tachycardia,
nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Herbal medications are
rarely tested by high-quality research, and clear proof of
beneficial effects is often lacking. The efficacy of other
commonly used herbal medications has not been
proven. The active ingredients of many herbal
medications are not readily known, and contamination
has been reported. Some of it can cause side effects like
headache, nausea, dizziness, and dry mouth. And it may
make you more likely to get sunburned. It also can
cause problems if you take certain drugs -- from heart
medicines to antidepressants, and even birth control
pills.
Some of the medicinal plants having adverse effects
are: Greater celandine, guarna, goldenseal,etc
importance of medicinal plants in home
remediations
Certain herbs improve the immunity of the person,
thereby reducing conditions such as fever. Some herbs
are also having antibiotic properties. A variety of
medicinal plants are used for home remedy.
 Turmeric is useful in inhibiting the growth of
germs, harmful microbes and bacteria. Turmeric
consists of antiseptic and antibacterial and hence is
widely used as a home remedy to heal cut and
wounds.

The conclusion we arrived at is that more than 80% of
the people living in cities and more than 90% of the
people living in villages are aware about the importance
of medicinal plants and use them for certain home
remediations. And I came to know about the attitudes of
different people about medicinal plants and using them
as a medicine. I also came to know the different species
of medicinal plants that are threatened and those which
are endangered on this mother earth.
