Writing practice Unit 6
A review
1 Put the paragraphs in the correct order to complete the review.
a At first, we learn of an old curse on the Baskerville family. According to legend, a nasty relation of Sir Henry was murdered by
a supernatural hound.
b In my opinion, this is an excellent novel. The story offers horror and suspense with enough plot twists to make it quite
unpredictable.
c The Hound of the Baskervilles is a detective story written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It is set in London and near Dartmoor in the
1880s. The main characters are Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson, along with Sir Henry Baskerville.
d As the story develops, the characters move to Dartmoor and the scenes become darker. There are new characters who become
potential suspects and victims. Of course, the threat of the hideous hound looms ominously in the background. Eventually, it
comes to an exciting conclusion.
e The story then moves to the 1880s where Sir Henry Baskerville seeks the detective’s help. The recent death of Sir Charles
Baskerville, Henry’s uncle, has revived the legend of the curse due to the discovery of huge animal footprints near Sir Charles’
corpse.
2 Correct the underlined mistakes in the sentences.
1 Most Sherlock Holmes’ novels happen in the UK in the 1880s.
2 Begin, Holmes usually has a visitor who needs his help.
3 Little a mystery is uncovered.
4 This time several potential suspects emerge.
5 At end, (in most cases) Holmes catches the criminal.
6 My opinion, Sherlock Holmes novels are very well written.
