Weather Pt5 - Sunshine

The Campbell-Stokes sunshine recorder measures sunlight using a glass sphere that focuses the sun's rays onto a graduated card placed between the sphere and a metal frame. The card is removed each day and the length of the burn trace indicates the number of hours and minutes of sunshine. The recorder is positioned in an open space facing south in the northern hemisphere and north in the southern hemisphere to accurately track sunlight throughout the day.

Sunshine

The number of hours and minutes of sunshine that a place receives each day is measured by a
sunshine recorder/ Campbell-Stokes Sunshine Recorder. This is a glass sphere about 10cm in
diameter which is partly surrounded by a curved metal frame on the inside of which is a sensitised
card. The special sensitised card is placed between a metal frame and the spherical glass. The card
is graduated in hours and minutes.
When the sun shines, the glass sphere focuses the sun’s rays on the card, and as the sun moves
across the sky, the rays burn a trace on the card. This only happens when the sun is shining. At the
end of each day, the card is taken out and the length of trace is turned into hours and minutes which
represent the total amount of sunshine for the day.

Location:
-The sunshine recorder should be in an open space without any shade.
- In temperate and subtropical latitudes, the instrument is placed to face South in the northern
hemisphere and North in the southern hemisphere.
- In the tropics two instruments are used on facing south and the other one facing north.
