Title: "Exploring the Past Perfect Tense with a Reading Exercise"

Objective:

This exercise is designed to help students practice and understand the past perfect tense through
a reading passage. Students will read a short story and identify instances where the past perfect
tense is used. This exercise will reinforce their knowledge of when and how to use this tense in
English.

Instructions:

Part 1: Understanding the Past Perfect Tense

2. Review the structure of the past perfect tense:

- Positive: Subject + had + past participle (e.g., had eaten)

- Negative: Subject + had not (hadn't) + past participle

- Question: Had + subject + past participle?

Part 2: Reading Exercise

Provide students with the following short story and ask them to read it carefully. Encourage them
to identify sentences or phrases where the past perfect tense is used.

**Story: "The Lost Key"**

Once upon a time, in a small village, there lived a curious boy named Timmy. Timmy was always
getting into adventures. One sunny morning, he decided to explore the old, abandoned house at
the end of the street. He had heard many stories about that house.

As he walked through the creaky front door, he noticed that the house had a mysterious
atmosphere. Dust had settled on every surface, and cobwebs hung in the corners. Timmy carefully
made his way to the staircase, his heart racing with excitement. He knew that no one had been in
this house for years.
Timmy had brought a flashlight with him, and he shined it around the dimly lit hallway. Suddenly,
he spotted something glinting under a dusty table. It was an old key! He reached down and picked
it up, wondering what it might unlock.

After exploring the house for a while longer, Timmy decided to leave. He had seen enough. As he
stepped back out into the bright sunlight, he couldn't stop thinking about the mysterious key he
had found. What had it unlocked in the past? Who had lived in that house before?

Part 3: Identifying Past Perfect Tense

After reading the story, have students identify sentences or phrases in which the past perfect
tense is used. Ask them to write down these sentences and underline the verbs in the past perfect
tense. Discuss their findings as a class.

Example:

- "Timmy had brought a flashlight with him..."

- "He had seen enough."

ANSWERS:

- He had heard many stories about that house.

- Dust had settled on every surface.

- No one had been in this house for years.

- He had found.

- What had it unlocked in the past?

- Who had lived in that house before?

Part 4: Discussion and Application

Engage the students in a discussion about the significance of using the past perfect tense in the
story. Encourage them to think about why the author chose to use this tense in those specific
moments. Then, challenge them to create their own sentences using the past perfect tense, either
related to the story or in new contexts.

Example:

Original Sentence: Sarah (watch) ___________ a movie last night.

**Edgar Allan Poe Reading Exercise**

**Instructions:** Read the following passages from Edgar Allan Poe's works and answer the
questions that follow each passage.

**Passage 1: Excerpt from "The Tell-Tale Heart"**

It's impossible to say how first the idea entered my brain, but once conceived, it haunted me day
and night. Object, there was none. Passion, there was none. I loved the old man. He had never
wronged me. He had never given me insult. For his gold, I had no desire. I think it was his eye! Yes,
it was this! One of his eyes resembled that of a vulture - a pale blue eye with a film over it.

**Question 1:** What is the narrator haunted by, and why does he want to harm the old man?

ANSWER:

The narrator was haunted by one of the man’s eye and he wanted to get rid of this torment.

**Passage 2: Excerpt from "The Raven"**

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,

Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore—

While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,

As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.

“’Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door—

Only this and nothing more.”

**Question 2:** What is the mood or atmosphere conveyed in this passage, and how does it
contribute to the overall tone of the poem?

ANSWER:

In my opinion, the passage is mysterious because conveys a ghostly sensation giving the poem
a dark and bizarre tone.
**Passage 3: Excerpt from "The Masque of the Red Death"**

But in the western or black chamber the effect of the firelight that streamed upon the dark
hangings through the blood-tinted panes, was ghastly in the extreme, and produced so wild a look
upon the countenances of those who entered, that there were few of the company bold enough
to set foot within its precincts at all.

**Question 3:** Describe the atmosphere and the effect of the firelight in the western chamber.
What emotions or reactions does it provoke in the guests?

ANSWER:

The effect of the firelight was ghastly and the panes were blood-tinted, so the guests were not
able to come in and see the scene.

**Passage 4: Excerpt from "The Fall of the House of Usher"**

From that chamber, and from that mansion, I fled aghast. The storm was still abroad in all its
wrath as I found myself crossing the old causeway. Suddenly there shot along the path a wild light,
and I turned to see whence a gleam so unusual could have issued; for the vast house and its
shadows were alone behind me. The radiance was that of the full, setting, and blood-red moon,
which now shone vividly through that once barely-discernible fissure, of which I have before
spoken as extending from the roof of the building, in a zigzag direction, to the base.

**Question 4:** What is the significance of the "wild light" and the "blood-red moon" in this
passage, and how do they relate to the overall mood of the story?

ANSWER:

The meaning of the wild light is an unusual radiance gleam that came from the house. It was the
blood red moon that represents the haunting and the shadows that the house has.

**Bonus Question:** In your own words, describe one recurring theme or motif that you notice in
Edgar Allan Poe's works based on these passages.

ANSWER:

In my opinion, the Edgar Allan Poe’s poems are based on terror, ocultism, death, and his way of
seeing the reality always tends to be tragic and melancolic.
