I am Lara Rougier.
And you are...
My name is Martin Gidner.
Lara, how long have you been learning English?
I can’t remember exactly. A long time, but I love it!
Martin, how about you?
Each candidate is asked two more questions on another topic
Task 2: Picture Story (2.5 mins for each candidate)
Before the test the candidate receives a picture story with an opening line; the task is to tell the story. The
candidate has had ten minutes to prepare a story. The candidate may make notes in the preparation stage, but
should not read aloud from a prepared script.
In this part of the test, you are going to tell the
stories you prepared earlier. Lara, here are the
pictures and your notes. Now, I‘d like you to tell
your story. You may look at your notes but please
do not read aloud from them. Tell the story to
everybody here. Remember you only have two
minutes. You have thirty seconds to look through
the pictures and your notes. Please start now.

Task 3: Transactional Dialogues (5 minutes)
The candidate receives a cue card. The card describes a situation, the candidate’s role in the situation,
and gives instructions. The candidate speaks, the interlocutor gives a scripted reply and then the candidate
responds to the reply. Each candidate will have three cue cards. Candidates alternate in doing this task.
In this part of the test you will be given some
situations. Read each card and say something
appropriate. Lara, read this card. When you are
ready please start a conversation with me.
I am your friend.

You meet up with a friend to go to a birthday

Task 4: Discussion (5 minutes)
The candidates as a pair receive a topic card which contains a debatable point or question (e.g. What are some
issues you have to deal with when starting a new job?). First they think of issues which answer the question
or contribute to the debate. Then the candidates discuss, expand on and prioritise these issues. Task 4 is the
only task in the Speaking Test in which the candidates talk to their partner.
For the final part of the test, you are going to talk
to each other about a topic I will give you. I’m just
going to listen.First think of four or five things.
Then, discuss which one is the best or most
important. You have three minutes altogether to try
and agree.
What are some issues you have to deal
with when starting a new job?
• e.g. new colleagues
• ……………..
• ……………..
• ……………..
I think good colleagues can help you a lot
actually. But I would like to mention finding your
way around the office.
I think you’re right, colleagues aren’t always
difficult. What do you mean by finding your way
around the place?
I mean you have to remember where to find
each person, where the exits are...
Oh, I see. Yes, that can definitely be an issue.
What else... at first you may have to learn new
things about the job, like rules and processes.
That’s true. This one is really important I think.
At the end of the discussion task the speaking test is over.
