Handheld Instruments
Manufacturing Expertise
Not only do we design the instruments, we design the machines that make
the instruments. In addition to custom tooling, we employ demanding quality
control standards and rigid test procedures that result in optimal consistency
from unit to unit.

Handles and Tips
Smith & Nephew ACUFEX™ instruments are designed with a broad range of handles
and tip configurations, allowing easy access to specific areas of the meniscus.
2
Knee Instruments
Designed for ease-of-use and versatility, our full line of ACUFEX punches, scissors and graspers have been specifically
designed for easy access to all areas of the knee.
Overview of Punches
ACUFEX punches are offered in a broad range of tips and configurations. Each punch in constructed with our exclusive
pinless hinge design, one-piece outer shaft and hand-honed edge to provide unrivaled strength, durability and sharpness.
Oval Punches
This family of punches offers the best of both worlds – the lowest profile and the
largest bite, facilitating end-on and lateral cutting. It’s the most versatile ACUFEX
instrument available. Curved saw design enables smooth contouring of the meniscus.
7209878* Overbiter
Posterior Punches
Gradually tapered shaft, low-profile tip and short jaw permit the tip to open wide
for cutting in tight posterior compartments.

Punches
Basket Punches – Scoop
The most traditional style of instrument, a classical punch shape with the parrot-
beak upper jaw to aid in the capture of tissue. Variety of shaft configurations allow
maneuverability in difficult-to-access areas of the meniscus. Long jaw and wide
design produce a wider, deeper cut than that of the 1.3 mm punch. The 2.7 mm
scoop tip and hook are designed to direct and hold tissue for aggressive trimming
1.0 mm Scoop Family
in the midsection-to-posterior meniscus. And the 3.4 mm scoop provides a large
bite for trimming in the middle meniscus; the workhorse punch of the scoop line.
Scissor Punches
Small bite size allows for increased visibility; consistently provides a clean shear
cut. The upcurved tip permits convenient shear cutting in the posterior aspect of
the knee.

Scissors
Smith & Nephew ACUFEX™ scissors are constructed without pins for maximum strength, dependability, durability
and safety. A wide range of tips and angles enable the surgeon to effectively dissect any part of the meniscus
from virtually any direction.
Rotary Scissors
20° Hooked, Left and Right – Angle follows the natural contour of the meniscus.
Small hook teeth enable the surgeon to probe before determining the final cut.
60° Hooked, Left and Right – Ideal for manipulation of tears in all aspects of the
meniscus, because of its unique sideways cutting action and ability to fit into tight
areas.
20° Short Serrated, Left and Right – This is the overall workhorse of
the scissor line when successive cuts are needed because the short tip allows more
accessibility in the joint and affords more precision and control.

Suction Punches
DYOVAC™ Suction Punches
Offers the dual convenience of resecting tissue while simultaneously evacuating
through a suction channel in the instrument.

Graspers
A broad selection of procedurally specific tip configurations provides maximum grasping capability and allows easy
access to all areas of the meniscus from a variety of approaches. Graspers with the ACUFEX™ Grasper Handle
feature an “infinite position” sliding-lock mechanism that holds tissue firmly without tearing or slipping, even in the
tightest of areas. Locking mechanism is not available on ACUFEX Pro Graspers.
Graspers – Cupped
Wave design allows for expansion of meniscus into the grasper cups to ensure a firm,
non-sliding grip.

Care and Maintenance Guidelines
Punches, Scissors, Graspers and Knives
The shafts and tips of ACUFEX™ Instruments are made of specially formulated and treated
surgical stainless steel for optimum sharpness and resistance to corrosion. However,
correct care and maintenance are important in optimizing their performance.
Cleaning
Whenever possible, use demineralized, distilled water when cleaning ACUFEX instruments.
Mineral deposits and impurities in tap water can lead to corrosion. For washing, use a
detergent or solution near neutral pH (7.0 to 8.5) for safe cleaning. Ultrasonic cleaners may
be used. After cleaning, dry the instruments to prevent water impurities from collecting on
surfaces. Place the instruments in the ACUFEX Sterilization Trays between uses to protect tips.
Lubrication
To protect instruments from staining and rusting prior to sterilization or storage,
dip instruments into a water-soluble antimicrobial lubricant, following manufacturer’s
instructions. The lubricant will help to free stiff instruments; if dipping does not free an
instrument, try soaking it overnight.
Resharpening/Preventative Maintenance
Instruments need to be inspected and evaluated on a regular basis to determine whether
resharpening, realignment or refurbishment is needed. Edge Express service from
Smith & Nephew will aid in maintaining proper function and performance. Only sharpening
by Smith & Nephew can maintain and restore the sharpness of the cutting blade or tip to our
original manufacturing specifications. Regular maintenance and the use of a Smith & Nephew
facility for resharpening will maximize the life of the instruments. For more information,
speak directly to your Smith & Nephew Sales Representative or our Service Sales
Specialist at +1 978 749 1262.
