Two weeks ago, Juan’s school closed for the summer holidays and he felt happy.
That weekend, Juan visited his grandparents, who live in the countryside near
Bilbao. Juan loves visiting them. He enjoys spending time in the garden with his
grandfather and learning about plants. Juan’s grandfather is great at teaching
him about nature. Juan loves being in the kitchen with his grandmother. They
bake cakes together. When Juan stayed with his grandparents, they visited the
Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. It was really busy.
Last week, Juan joined a summer science club for young people near where he lives. He met lots
of children there and made new friends, like Pablo and Ignacio. Pablo is very friendly, confident
and hard-working, but Ignacio is shy and lazy. Juan is the cleverest boy in the club. He always
finishes his experiments first. Juan, Pablo and Ignacio are good at working together. They use the
club’s tablets to find out information about the planets. On Friday, Juan couldn’t go to the club
because he was sick. He felt sad but he called his friends on his phone that evening.

Tom and his mum have had a very busy day. They cleaned the house together
this morning. His mum cleaned the windows and Tom used the vacuum
cleaner to clean the floor. Then Tom helped his mum make some vegetable
soup for lunch. But after that the cooker was a mess, so Tom cleaned it.
His mum made a big chocolate cake because it’s Tom’s sister’s birthday
tomorrow. She’ll be ten.
In the afternoon, Tom’s mum sat down and made him a special costume made of cotton and
rubber. This is because Tom is in the musical at school. She used her new sewing machine, which
she bought last week, to make it. But there was a problem with the sewing machine and it doesn’t
work now! When she was making the costume, Tom made a lovely birthday card for his sister. It’s
made of paper and plastic. He’ll give it to her tomorrow morning.

acting, you can also visit the Kid's Theatre, where you can try on lots of colourful costumes and work

B Festival X
Festival X has been on for ten years now. It's always a great day out because it’s at the coast.
This year, as well as pop bands, you can hear classical music played by children in The String
Room. There will be some amazing Argentinian dancers on the stage, too. If you like jewellery,
visit the Jewellery Tent, where you can buy beautiful necklaces made of silver or rubber. Also,
for the first time, there will be a funny puppet show given by children.
C Summer Fest
Have you ever listened to Moroccan music? Well, this year at Summer Fest, you can! Visit us
if you want to have fun with your family. Children of all ages can learn how to make birthday
cards from paper and plastic. Or they can visit the Cooking Tent to learn how to make cakes

1 In the exam, students will do the speaking activity individually with an examiner,
who will ask them to find four differences in the pictures. To practice for the exam
in class, students can work in pairs or individually with the teacher or classroom
assistant. They should find four differences in the pictures.
Suggested answers:
In the first picture, it’s the 1st of June. In the second picture, it’s the 2nd of July.
In the first picture, the boy is eating a sandwich. In the second picture, the boy is
eating a burger.
In the first picture, it’s one o’clock. In the second picture, it’s two o’clock.
In the first picture, there’s a cat. In the second picture, there’s a dog.
In the first picture, there’s a picture of a turtle. In the second picture, there’s a picture
of a bear.
In the first picture, there is a lot of orange juice. In the second picture, there is a little
orange juice.
2 In the exam, students will do the speaking activity individually with an examiner,
who will describe the first picture in the story. Then the student continues the story
by describing what is happening in the rest of the pictures. To practise for the exam
in class, students can work in pairs or individually with the teacher or classroom
assistant. Talk about the first picture, for example, ‘These pictures show a story. It’s
called “The clever dog”. Look at the first picture. A man is walking along a path next
to a river. It’s a windy day. A woman and her daughter are walking with their dog.’
Then ask the students to continue the story.
Suggested answers:
In the second picture, a strong wind comes and blows the man's hat off. Woman and
girl are still walking the dog, but he is straining on the leash.
In the third picture, the man's hat is in the river. The dog has pulled away from the girl
and is now going to the river.
In the fourth picture, the dog has got the man's hat from the river and is dropping it at
the man's feet. The girl and woman are now standing next to the man.

The examiner will demonstrate how to do this task with the first set of four odd-one-
out pictures and then will ask the student to choose one picture in the other three
sets and say which is different and why. To practise for the exam in class, students
can work in pairs or individually with the teacher or classroom assistant. Talk about
the first set of pictures and say which is different and why. For example, ‘These are
a rabbit, a penguin and an elephant. They are animals. But this is an apple. It’s a
fruit.’ Then ask students to do the same with the rest of the sets of pictures.
Suggested answers:
You can’t eat orange juice. You drink it.
Dancing is an indoor sport/activity, all the others are outdoor sports.
They are all places except for the comic, which is an object.
4 In the exam, students will do the speaking activity individually with an examiner.
The examiner will ask the student some questions about themselves (for example,
about their school, freetime activities, holidays, and family and friends). To practise
for the exam in class, students can work in pairs or individually with the teacher
or classroom assistant. Ask questions about different topics, e.g. ‘Let’s talk about
hobbies. What activities do you like doing at the weekend?’
