Report 123

This laboratory report contains the results of various blood tests performed on a 1 year and 11 month old male patient. The tests measured iron, total iron binding capacity, transferrin saturation, hemoglobin, and ferritin levels. The results indicate the patient has normal iron and hemoglobin levels but low ferritin, suggesting iron deficiency.

Comment:

Most body iron is found in hemoglobin. The serum measurement of iron is useful in the differential diagnosis of anemia, iron deficiency anemia,
thalassemia, possible sideroblastic anemia, and iron poisoning.

Total iron-binding capacity in serum, representing transferrin concentration in iron-binding capacity, is a useful index of nutritional iron status. Iron
deficiency anemia is characterized by a decreased serum Fe, increased TIBC or transferrin, and a decreased transferrin saturation. Serum TIBC is
increased in iron deficiency.

Serum TIBC is decreased in anemia of chronic disease.

Ferritin
FERRITIN 14.1 ng/ml 25-350
ECLIA

Comment :

Ferritin functions as an intracellular site of iron storage. Clinically significant concentrations are found in serum, and the concentration of serum ferritin
is directly related to total body iron stores. Serum ferritin concentrations are determined to evaluate iron stores in normal patients, patients with iron
deficiency and iron overload, and to monitor the response to iron therapy. The clinical use of the ferritin measurements have been extensively
reviewed.
