This document is a work put together for the English subject, and as “A Worldwide
Movie” as the theme.

Introduction
The movie industry includes the technological and commercial institutions
of filmmaking, film production companies, film studios, cinematography,
animation, film production, pre-production, post-production, film production,
screenwriting, film festivals, distribution, and actors.
The industry that we know today was originated in the 19th century through
a series of technological developments such as the creation of photography, the
discovery of the illusion of motion by merging still images, and the study of human
and animal locomotion. Since then, the industry has evolved a lot, and films are
created worldwide. The poles of this field are the United States, China, Japan,
the United Kingdom, and France.
The cinema in the USA, also often referred to as Hollywood, is the oldest
film industry and is also the one with the biggest revenue. This center of the
industry creates several hundred films every year and makes between 2009 and
2015 $10 billion annually. The Academy Awards, also known as The Oscars, are
one of the most acclaimed ceremonies in this industry. They’re held by the
Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, and until 2019 more than 3000
Oscars had been given.
The actors are fundamental in this sector because, above all, they act.
Acting is the activity of telling a story through a performance either in theater,
television, film, radio, or any other medium. The first actor was Greek and his
name was Thespis. He is known as the first person to act on stage and some
people call him the “inventor of tragedy”.
With this research, I intend to get to know better some actors and
actresses, learning more about their life, filmography, and a list of recognitions,
since this industry means a lot to me as well as some of the people in it.

United States of America
• Meryl Streep: also known by many as the greatest living actress, has
collected throughout her career many prizes, she owns
the record of 21 nominations for the Academy Awards,
winning 3, and the record of 32 nominations for the
Golden Globe Awards, winning 8. Streep also
possesses 2 British Academy Film Awards, 3
Primetime Emmy Awards, and 6 Grammy Awards,
among all 178 wins and 374 nominations. Some of her
films are The Devil Wears Prada, Mamma Mia,
Sophie’s Choice, Julia, and Don’t Look Up. She also has a star on the
Hollywood Walk of Fame.
• Leonardo DiCaprio: began his career in the late 1980s by appearing in
television commercials. His roles in Romeo + Juliet and Titanic helped him
achieve international recognition. In the 2010s
DiCaprio participated in The Wolf of Wall Street, The
Revenant, for which he won an Academy Award and a
BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, and
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. He’s the founder of
Appian Way Productions, a production company, and
the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, a nonprofit
organization devoted to promoting environmental
awareness. In total, he has 101 wins and 259 nominations.
• Jennifer Lawrence: was the highest-paid actress in
the world in 2015 and 2016, with her films earning over
$5.5 billion worldwide. While she was on a vacation in
NYC with her family, she was spotted by a talent scout.
After that, she moved to Los Angeles and began her
acting career. Her big break in the industry came with
the movie Winter's Bone, which gave her Academy
Award and Golden Globes first nominations. Her next

big films were X-Men: First Class and saga The Hunger Games. Her list
of accolades includes an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, 2 AACTA
International Awards, and 3 Golden Globes, among others.
• Angelina Jolie: is the daughter of Jon Voight, an Oscar-winner, and
Marcheline Bertrand, who's also an actress. In 1999 she performed in Girl,
Interrupted, and won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, a
Golden Globe Award, and a SAG Award. In 2000, Jolie was asked to star
in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, a movie inspired by a
videogame. In 2004, Angelina filmed the movie Mr. &
Mrs. Smith with co-star Brad Pitt, who she married
later. The couple divorced in 2019 and now have a
total of 6 children. She has directed, produced, wrote,
and stared on Land of Blood and Honey, By the Sea
and First They Killed My Father. The actress’s
filmography includes A Mighty Heart, Changeling,
Maleficent (also producing), Unbroken, and Eternals.
She also did the voice role of Tigress in Kong Fu Panda. In addition to her
career in film, she’s also known for her humanitarian efforts promoting
causes such as conservation, education, and women’s rights, and is most
noted for her advocacy on behalf of refugees for the United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees.
United Kingdom
• Emma Thompson: was born in London, the daughter of two actors. She
studied at Newnham College, where she became a
member of Footlights, a theatrical club, and appeared
in the series Alfresco. In 1992, she was the protagonist
of the movie Howards End, which a year later gave
her an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading
Role and a British Academy Film Award. Three years
later, she won another Academy Award for Best
Adapted Screenplay with Sense and Sensibility,

making her the only person in history to win Academy Awards for both
acting and writing. Other of her notable film credits are in the Harry Potter
movies, Last Chance Harvey, Men in Black 3, Beauty and the Beast, and
Cruella.
• Benedict Cumberbatch: is a 45 years old actor, born in London, and has
throughout his career received various accolades, including a British
Academy Television Award for Best Actor for Patrick
Melrose, and a Primetime Emmy Award for
Outstanding Lead Actor on Sherlock. He has also won
a Critics' Choice Television Award and a Laurence
Olivier Award. His performances in The Imitation
Game and The Power of the Dog earned him
nominations for an Academy Award, a British
Academy Film Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award,
and a Golden Globe Award, all for Best Actor in a
Leading Role. He’s also part of the Marvel cast, playing the role of Doctor
Strange.
• Emma Watson: was born in Paris, to British parents but moved to
Oxfordshire when she was five, so, her nationality is also British. When
she was ten she got the role of Hermione in Harry
Potter and The Sorcerer Stone, which was her
cinematic screen debut. She was nominated for five
awards for her performance, winning the Young Artist
Award for Leading Young Actress in a Feature Film.
She played that role for 10 years, in all of the following
movies of the saga. Emma has also been in The Perks
of Being a Wallflower, Beauty and the Beast, and Little
Women. Her list of awards includes a BAFTA/LA
Britannia Awards, 3 MTV Movie + TV Awards, 2 Nickelodeon Kids Choice
Awards, and 2 People's Choice Awards.

Colombia
• Sofia Vergara: born in Barranquilla, she’s a model and an actress whose
career broke through with the role of Gloria Delgado-
Pritchett on the American television series Modern
Family. She’s also a judge on America's Got Talent.
Her list of recognitions includes 11 wins and 46
nominations, among them 4 nominations for the
Primetime Emmy Awards, 4 for the Golden Globes
Awards, and 6 for the People's Choice Awards with 2
wins. In addition, Vergara does voice acting having
participated in The Simpsons, Family Guy, and The Emoji Movie.
Romania
• Sebastian Stan: is a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe cast playing
Bucky Barnes/ Winter Soldier first appearing in
Captain America: The First Avenger. He continued his
role in the MCU movies Captain America: The Winter
Soldier, Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, Black
Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame,
and the series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. He
has also participated in Black Swan, Once Upon a
Time, Gossip Girl, Political Animals, and I, Tonya.

Mexico
• Lupita Nyong’o: has been in the industry since 2005.
She has also joined the MCU cast with the role of Nakia
in the movie Black Panther and she’s also a part of the
Star Wars cast playing Mas Kanata in the films Star
Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Rise of
Skywalker. The actress has won an Academy Award
for the movie 12 Years a Slave.
Australia
• Cate Blanchett: is regarded as one of the finest
actresses of her generation and is the recipient of
numerous accolades, including 2 Academy Awards, 3
British Academy Film Awards, 3 Screen Actors Guild
Awards, and 3 Golden Globe Awards. Her list of roles
includes Brie Evantee on Don’t Look Up, Lou on
Ocean's 8, Hela on Thor: Ragnarok, Carol Aird on
Carol, Lady Tremaine on Cinderella, and Jasmine on
Blue Jasmine, among others.
• Margot Robbie: was born in Queensland and began
her career on the television series Neighbours and Pan
Am. Her breakthrough was in the movie The Wolf of
Wall Street, which led to Jane Porter’s roles in The
Legend of Tarzan and Harley Quinn in the DC films
Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey, and The Suicide Squad.
Among all of her achievements are 2 nominations for
the Academy Awards, 4 for the BAFTA Awards, and 4
for the People's Choice Awards winning 1.

Ukrainian
• Mila Kunis: is a native of Chernivtsi, but her family
language was Russian, when she was 7 her family
moved to Los Angeles. One of her first roles was on
the Fox television series That '70s Show at the age of
14 and since 1999 she has been giving voice to Meg
Griffin on Family Guy. She also participates in Black
Swan, Ted, Oz the Great and Powerful, Bad Moms,
and its sequel, A Bad Moms Christmas. Kunis has won
an Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror
Films, Hollywood Film Awards, MTV Movie + TV Awards, among others.
Israel
• Natalie Portman: is the protagonist of the movie Black
Swan, with which she won an Academy Award, a
BAFTA Award, and a Golden Globe. The actress also
portrays Padmé in Star Wars: Episode I – The
Phantom Menace, Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the
Clones, and Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the
Sith and Jane in Thor and Thor: The Dark World. On
her résumé also are the movies Closer and Jackie.
Hong Kong
• Jackie Chan: is an actor, producer, and singer, as well
as, a martial artist who has received fame stars on the
Hong Kong Avenue of Stars and the Hollywood Walk
of Fame. Overall he has 50 nominations and 47 wins,
including an Academy Award, 3 MTV Movie + TV
Awards, 5 Hong Kong Film Awards, and 3 Kids' Choice
Awards. His résumé includes 64 credits as a producer,
141 as an actor, 18 as a director, and 16 as a writer.

Spain
• Pénelope Cruz: is the first and only Spanish actress that has been
nominated for and won, an Academy Award, as well
as the first to have received a star on the Hollywood
Walk of Fame. At age 15 she won a modeling agency
competition and began appearing in music videos and
on Spanish television. Her third movie Belle Epoque
won an Academy Award for best foreign film and
brought her international attention. Some of her
international movies are Pirates of the Caribbean: On
Stranger Tides, Murder on the Orient Express, Volver, and Nine.
France
• Marion Cotillard: is an actress, singer, and environmentalist, who was
the face of Lady Dior for nine years, and since 2020 has been the face of
the fragrance Chanel No.5. Most of her films are
French but she made her transition into Hollywood
with Big Fish and won her first César Awards with A
Very Long Engagement. La Vie en Rose gave
Cotillard her second César Award, a BAFTA Award, a
Golden Globe Award, a Lumières Award, and an
Academy Award for Best Actress, also making her the
first and only actress to have won an Academy Award
for a French-language performance. She also sings, plays guitar, bass
guitar, keyboard and tambourine. She has eleven singles, most of them
for movie soundtracks.

Canada
• Sandra Oh: was born to Korean parents in Ottawa,
and is most known for her roles as Cristina Yang on
Grey’s Anatomy, Eve Polastri on Killing Eve, Ji-Yoon
Kim on The Chair, and Stephanie on Sideways. She
has been nominated 8 times for the Primetime Emmy
Awards, and 1 for the BAFTA Awards, she’s also won
2 Golden Globes, and 1 People's Choice Award, out of
4 nominations, and 4 Screen Actors Guild Awards.
• Ryan Gosling: was born on November 12, 1980. He
gained more recognition at age 13 for being a child star
on the Disney Channel's The Mickey Mouse Club, and
his first film was The Believer. With Half Nelson,
Gosling was nominated for the Academy Award for
Best Actor, and later he was nominated for the same
category with La La Land, and also won a Golden
Globe with it.
Portugal
• Alexandra Lencastre: studied at Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema,
where she graduated in 1986. When she started to
work, in theater, she won the Revelation Actress
Award, from the Portuguese Association of Theater
Critics. Some of her work in television includes Fúria
de Viver and Ana e os Sete, which gave her 2
Portuguese Golden Globes for Best Actress, and A
Única Mulher, winning the Aquíla Award for Best
Leading Actress in Television. The soap opera Meu
Amor, in which Alexandra Lencastre was, won the International Emmy
Award for Best Telenovela.

• Eunice Muñoz: was considered one of the best Portuguese actresses.
Coming from a family of actors, she started doing
theatre being only 5 years old and has done about 76
plays over the years. In 2016 she performed for the
first time, in the auditorium that had been named after
her, Auditorium Eunice Muñoz, with the play Miss
Daisy. In 2013 the actress was diagnosed with thyroid
cancer and has had surgery and chemotherapy. After
that, she lost her voice and had speech therapy,
partially regained her voice. Eunice Muñoz died on
April 15, 2022, when she was hospitalized for two days. Overall, she made
40 television projects and 15 movies, won a Sophia Award in 2015, and 3
Portuguese Golden Globes. She also accomplished a Medal of Cultural
Merit and 6 Honorary Orders.
• Daniela Melchior: is a 25-year-old actress and model whose first role on
television was in Mulheres while studying teather. She
as also participated in Massa Fresca, Ouro Verde, A
Herdeira, and Pecado. She dubbed the Portuguese
version of Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-
Verse. Her film list includes O Caderno Negro, Parque
Mayer and her biggest role as Cleo Cazo/Ratcatcher 2
in the James Gunn's DC Extended Universe film The
Suicide Squad, co-staring with Edris Elba, Margot
Robbie, and Viola Davis. Her career is still on the rise.

Conclusion
After doing this assignment, I’ve learned that in the film industry there are
various areas including film production, actors, cinematography, animation,
screenwriting, pre-production, and post-production, among others. Also that
what we know of the industry today came from technological developments, and
it continues to evolve.
Another thing that can be taken out of this work is that there are multiple
centers of this industry such as the United States, more specifically Hollywood,
China, Japan, France, and the United Kingdom. The biggest and oldest one is
Hollywood, producing billions of dollars every year. There’re also some
celebrations but the most acclaimed of them are The Academy Awards or The
Oscars.
The actors are the main topic of this research. Thespis was the first actor
and the first person to act on stage, also being considered the “inventor of
tragedy”. Throughout this work I’ve talked about several actors and actresses,
the films they’ve entered, the awards they received, and their life, concluding
this way my objective.
