DEVELOPMENT & STORY
Early brish armour has always been a favourite of mine, so when
Bronco reteased their new £19 cruiser tank it was a real “must
hhave" for me. The first type of cruiser tank was the A@ which had a
‘quite complicated roadwnee! system not realy sultable for the
“cruising” role ~ it was used later on Valentine infantry tanks. The
Fussian BT fast tanks using the revolutionary Chritie-suspension
hhad a serious effect on British military leadors - that was just what
they needed: a simple and reliable suspension wtsen allowed the
highest possible speed fora tank it was Used later en the famous
T-24 tanks also)
Britain bought an orginal Cristie tank in the USA in 1936 and the
work began to make a new type of cruiser tank. The hull was
redesigned and the same turret from the AQ was used. A 240 hp
Nuffield Liberty aero engine was fitted providing sufficient power to
reach a top speed of 80 mph (8 kmh
‘The main armament was a 2 pounder (40 mm) antitank gun ane
an auxiliary Vickers or Besa machine gun. Tne maximum armour
was 28 mm. On the turrets of the Mk Il Extra sloped armour plates
Were added which made the tank auto modem looking. The At3. GT),
Cruiser tanks were used in France, Greece and in North Africa unt

to blank off the eponcens although this
area is mostly hiddon by the sid skins.

do capture the look of the real thing but |
found the ft of the links a ite loose. In the
fond I decided to replace the kit tracks with
fa sat of Fil tracks, These feature the
casting numbers which are missing trom
the plastic links but did not ft the kit
sprockets. The Friul supplied sprockots
were substiuted but these did not match
the plton of te tracks elther! Adjustment
‘and bad language were required to get the

well enough moulded to be used.

would recommend scraping the part

There Is no aveiding the tedious task ofall
those ball and chains around the back of
the turret but atleast the kt offers one of
the better solutions, eee the Chain Gang

a puzzle. Those down the sides of the turet

Defining the colour of IDF vehicles is never
‘easy but | gottied on Vallejo Groen Grey as
‘2 sonsibie starting point. With this be
‘applied | hand painted all the markings as
these are not precisely painted on the
Vohicles. | used masking tape as a guide
for the barrel markings. A fst wash of
lute oll colours wae Used to detine all tho
etal | then avitehed to acryles for the
rest of the process using Litecolor Dust 2
to apply pin washes around all the details. |

| applied several coats of dust building the

the raised features on the top surfaces.
Dust streaks down the vertical surtaces
land thrown up by the running gear were
brush painted using citterent densities of
the same colour again. The tracks were
biackoned using TI Hobbies Blackering
solution and treated with an acayie pin
wash and a coat of pigments, Polished
‘areas were butfed with sanding sticks. The
stained areas where ol has mixed withthe
ust wore built up with citferent tones of
Drown mixed with tha dust anace.

Most of the Pz Vs used by the Gzechs can not be clearly defined

‘Once the model was cleaned of dust, accumulated on horizontal
surfaces | started the application of Tamiya surface primer directy
from the spray can, XF-60 dark Yeliow was the frst paint layer
‘Then the mixture of Tamiya acres XF-51, XF-58 m XF-4 vas
sprayed onto the model to reproduce the soviet 480 colour, which
‘was typical for all Gzech tanks. The areas under the apare wheels
and lost toolbox were protected with masks, leaving the German
Yellow colour. used XF-69 Nato Black for painting the ruBbor rims
ofthe wheel a8 it Is more sultabia fortis purpose than XF-1 Fiat
Black. Then I started weathering the model using three layers of
SIN thers for green vehicles which were applied one-by-0ne.
|Washing was mac with 602 Abt paint Shadow Brown to highlight
the relief of the model. The chips were added with Akan ang
Vallejo acrylics and the aid ofa fine Brush. used the Gulf war sand
and Light dust pigments from MIG which are the best tones to
represent the Golan Helght's dust. The whole process of bulcing
land painting is represented in the following steps.
