1. The document summarizes two case studies about conducting qualitative research. Case 5c discusses a student's research on UK ski tour operators, highlighting benefits of interviews and case study approaches. Case 6c examines issues of access and ethics in a family business study in Greece. 2. Both cases teach important lessons about research design, methodology, obtaining permission and informed consent, managing expectations, and remaining objective. The reflective writing demonstrates learning around topic selection, credibility, and interpersonal skills needed for quality research. 3. By analyzing the cases, the student recognizes how to improve their own research proposal and better understand qualitative methods, time management, ethics, and applying lessons to effectively plan and conduct independent research.

Qualitative Reflective Writing

Case 5c: The international marketing management decisions of UK Ski tour operators

Angela Roper, University of Surrey

1. Case 5c provides a better understanding of firms and how they function. There are

advantages to conducting research that I have discovered through this case study.

Interviewing people who work in businesses is one of the benefits of conducting research.

Elin had the opportunity to interview tour company management while conducting

research.

2. After reading the case, I realized that Elin had chosen her research topic based on her

interests and that she had achieved an excellent result. This, in turn, provided me with

some direction in selecting my research topic. Focused on what I am good at or where I

am most interested.

3. I believe Elin chose to utilize a case study approach for her research. First, she followed

the example of previous experts who had used case studies to investigate a similar topic

and chose this research method. In addition, by participating in a case study, she will

have the opportunity to learn a great deal about ski management while also gaining

valuable experience. I have realized that if a researcher wants to learn about current

business trends and practices in a real-world environment, then a case study is the best

way to do it.

4. I have learned the importance of choosing effective research designs. After reading case

5c, it is apparent that research designs such as case studies enable researchers to collect

more data. An investigation can be aided by documents, interviews, surveys, and

3

observations. The case study permits the researcher to have a minor influence over

events. The researcher can't influence the method or the results.

5. In my analysis of the case, I believe Elin has to understand that managers are inclined to

grant access to research if they sense a business or personal gain from it. To get past the

gatekeeper, Elin must offer something of value. If Elin has access, tour operators may

decide to stop working with her abruptly. Access to business practices and processes does

not ensure that businesses will cooperate through the process. This has improved my

understanding of being objective and independent in research.

6. I got to know the significance of evaluating my research credibility. To conduct effective

research, I need to assess my credibility. Because of their lack of awareness of current

business trends, some organizations may refuse to allow an outsider to perform a research

project. This is something Elin must overcome by increasing her level of expertise.

7. In my analysis, a researcher must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills

to conduct effective research. Suitable research methods necessitate the ability to ask

insightful questions, decipher the answers provided, and remain adaptable in a wide range

of unexpected circumstances. A skilled researcher must also be able to focus on the needs

of the individuals they are studying and remain objective.

Case 6c: Getting in, getting on...? misreading issues related to access and ethics in a small

scale enterprise

Teresa Smallbone, Oxford Brookes University.

1. Studies' integrity hinges on ethical considerations. After returning to Greece, his

coworkers at his uncle's company, as reported by Lefteris, were unwilling to participate

4

in a survey. I have learned that researchers need to get the permission of their population

at every level of data collecting to conduct a proper study.

2. In my analysis, informed consent is obtained by providing survey participants with

sufficient information, allowing them enough time to respond, and being completely

transparent. Other sensitive matters, such as funding, should also be made public. It also

lends credence to the work we do. Lefteris, in my opinion, should have done more to gain

the permission of his subjects or halted the study altogether.

3. Having read case 6c, I can ascertain that researchers are faced with a challenge as they

narrow down the research topics and questions they want to investigate further. The

research methodology is essential to every study since it outlines the methods and

processes that should be used. The validity and reliability of the study's data collection

and generation can only be evaluated with this information.

4. When it came to gathering information for his class project, Lefteris figured that talking

to his uncle, who owns a business, would be the most convenient route. Observation,

surveys, and interviews, according to Lefteris, were the most effective methods for

gathering sufficient data. I believe that this approach will apply to my research.

5. Before reading the case study, I was completely adrift in my understanding of research

design and the study proposal. I learned about statistical and qualitative approaches from

Lefteris, which will help me decide which strategy to pursue in my research. These

methods can be applied to my research

6. Aside from doing my research project from the family company, I have learned that it is a

good idea to start my research from the questions I am trying to answer, as in the case of
5

Lefteris. However, it will make no difference for my proposal since I am not focusing on

anything related to the family company.

7. My study proposal will benefit greatly from this information. This case has taught me

time management skills and made me appreciate ethics more. Now that I have gained

some confidence, I am sure I will give the research project my all.
