Read through the following text about an unusual festival which takes place every
year in Lleida, Spain. In the activities, you will need to demonstrate understanding of
the main points and some of the detail.
Lleida es una ciudad bonita en el norte de España con 139.000 habitantes. Hay una
catedral, parques, una universidad y muchos restaurantes. En Lleida hay una fiesta curiosa
que tiene lugar cada año a finales de mayo. Se llama “la Fiesta del Caracol”.
Es una fiesta relativamente moderna y muy popular. Durante los tres días de fiesta, los
habitantes de Lleida comen doce toneladas de caracoles. Hay caracoles de España, del norte
de África y de Sudamérica. ¡Son deliciosos!

Durante la fiesta normalmente hay un programa con muchas actividades, por ejemplo
exhibiciones de baile, conciertos, fuegos artificiales y música dedicada a los caracoles.

Stem-changing verbs, sometimes called ‘boot’ verbs, have regular endings, but the
vowel before the ending changes.
There are three kinds of change: e > ie, o > ue and e > i.

Speaking skills: Making plans
A Play ‘Battleships’ in pairs.
● Each player will need to draw an ‘Enemy ships’ grid (6 x 6 squares).
● Then shade in squares for your ships horizontally or vertically in the grid below:

(2 squares) and una fragata (1 square).
● Take turns at taking a shot at your opponent by using the coordinates to form a
