Potential Benefits of Padma Multipurpose Bridge in Business

INTRODUCTION
The construction of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge is a project that millions of people in
Bangladesh's southwest have long desired.
These areas were shut off from the country's main economic hub, the Dhaka-Chattogram economic
corridor, before the bridge opened. The sole modes of transportation and communication on the
Padma River to the south-western areas were launches, boats, and ferries. This mode of
transportation took a lot of time and was uncertain.
Economic activities in the southwest zone have not been particularly simple due to weak
connection. As a result, the districts did not benefit greatly from industrialization. As a result, the
region is plagued by serious issues like poverty and underemployment.
Furthermore, the impact of climate change on this area is significant. Agriculture productivity is
significantly impacted by increased water salinity, and this region is particularly susceptible to
flooding.
But the Padma Bridge will benefit the area in numerous ways.
It will link the isolated 21 districts in the southwest to the national economy. Additionally, it will
link the city with the country's second- and third-largest ports, Payra and Mongla, respectively.
An increase in connectivity will attract investment to the area. As a result, the economy as a whole
will expand in addition to the southwestern region's economic success and job growth.
According to estimates, the Padma Multipurpose Bridge will increase the nation's annual GDP by
1.23%. Similarly, it is anticipated that the GDP of the southwest will grow by 2.5%.
The bridge will also be connected to the Padma Train Link Project, which is anticipated to make
Bangladesh a part of the trans-Asian rail network and speed up GDP development by about 1%.
Bangladesh will be able to keep up a railroad network with Bhutan, Nepal, and India by doing this.
The bridge will shorten the distance between Dhaka and the port of Mongla and increase access to
the southwest districts. The amount of cargo moving between Dhaka and the Mongla Port will
increase, which will help improve congestion in the Chattogram port.
For vehicles, buses, and trucks, it is anticipated that the journey time between the Dhaka division
and the southwest region will decrease by around two hours, and by more than ten hours for trucks.
A study by the Japan International Cooperation Agency found that a 10% decrease in travel time
to and from Dhaka would result in a 5.5% increase in the region's economic output.
New commercial prospects brought about by improved transportation will benefit industry and
agriculture. There will be a huge number of work opportunities as a result of the establishment of
new industrial units.
To speed up industrialization and economic growth, the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority is
creating 17 economic zones in the area. These zones will include every district in the southwest.
Padma Bridge 9

As the need for labor increases, there will be more hiring, re-skilling or up-skilling of the labor
force, and maybe an increase in the minimum wage. Therefore, having more economic options
will ultimately lead to better living standards and a decrease in poverty.
"The Padma Bridge is the largest infrastructural project in the country's southwest, assisting
millions of people in their socioeconomic development. With pillars that are 3 meters in radius
and a piling that is 128 meters deep, the Padma Bridge ranks 122nd among the longest bridges in
the world.
The 6.15-kilometer-long bridge's last span was built in December 2021, after building on the
structure had started in 2014. This self-financed megaproject in Bangladesh is expected to cost
Tk30,193.39 crore.
The nation's south-western region's GDP growth rate is anticipated to increase by 2.5% with the
implementation of the megaproject, while the overall GDP growth rate is anticipated to increase
by 1.23% annually. (Basu, 2022)
Objectives of the Study
The study has been conducted with the following objectives:
• To investigate the benefits and potentiality of Business through Padma Multipurpose
Bridge.
• To explore the benefits of various sectors of business in Bangladesh.
• To find out the future economic growth in south-west area of Bangladesh.

LITERATURE REVIEW
The bridge will improve transportation to the southwestern districts and reduce the distance
between Dhaka and the port of Mongla. Increased cargo movement between Dhaka and the
Mongla Port will also reduce congestion in the port of Chattogram.
It is expected that the travel time between the Dhaka division and the southwestern region will be
saved by about two hours for cars and buses and over 10 hours for trucks. A 10 per cent reduction
in travel time to and from Dhaka will lead to a rise in the region's economic output by 5.5 per cent,
according to a study by the Japan International Cooperation Agency. (Ahmed, 2022)
The Padma Bridge is a unique symbol of Bengali self-esteem and self-reliance. The long-cherished
dream and much desired Padma Bridge is no longer a dream but a reality. So, the whole nation is
overwhelmed by the news of the inauguration of the Padma Bridge. It is learned that the bridge
will be commissioned from the day after the inauguration. If the bridge is launched, 21 districts of
the region will be directly connected with Dhaka.
The Padma Bridge is a wonder of the world for many reasons. It will be able to bring a radical
change in the economic dynamics of the country. The country's top economists and businessmen
have termed the bridge as a 'game changer' of the country's economy. If both road and rail sections
of the Padma Bridge are opened, the country's GDP growth will increase by 2.5 percent. The
Padma Bridge will have a huge impact on the country's economy; will change the destiny of the
nation. The speakers said this at a dialogue titled 'Importance of Padma Bridge in National
Economy' at Sonargaon Hotel in the capital recently saying that there would be improvement in
the overall sector including economy.
Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD), Fellow Professor at the event Dr. Mostafizur Rahman said, "If
our GDP is 450 billion dollars, if rail and bridges are launched together, it will add 10 billion
dollars to the economy at the rate of 2.5 percent per annum." He hoped that the construction of the
Padma Bridge would add three and a half times more to our economy than the cost of 3.5 billion
dollars. (Uddin, 2022)
Motives behind the study
For this research, to analysis the potential economic growth through Padma Multipurpose Bridge.
In light of the foregoing, the researcher's study aims to assess the current state and rate of expansion
of the business industry, which has the potential to significantly boost the nation's economic
growth.

Potential Benefits of Padma Multipurpose Bridge

The Padma Bridge will be the largest infrastructure project in the country's south-western region,
contributing to the socioeconomic growth of millions of people. The Padma Bridge is listed 122nd
among the world's longest bridges, with pillars that are 3 meters in radius and piling that is 128
meters deep, making it the world's deepest piling.
The bridge's construction began in 2014, and the final span of the 6.15-kilometre-long structure
was constructed in December 2021. The anticipated cost of this self-financed megaproject in
Bangladesh is Tk30,193.39 crore.
With the implementation of the megaproject, the GDP growth rate of the nation's south-western
region is expected to improve by 2.5% percent, whereas the total GDP growth rate is expected to
rise by 1.23% every year. (Basu, 2022)
Economic implications
The construction of the bridge will have a major economic impact on the nation. In 2010, Mansell
stated that the bridge's Economic Rate of Return (ERR) was 18% and its Reward Ratio (BCR) was
1.6%. There will be a 22% ERR and a 2.1 BCR.
Padma Bridge 12

In other words, it will be financially advantageous to build the bridge. There will be a two- to four-
hour reduction in travel time between Dhaka and the 21 southern districts. In addition to facilitating
the supply of raw materials and industrialization, the direct connection to the capital will promote
trade and commerce growth. Agriculture will advance tremendously. Higher commodity prices
will be good for farmers.
Along with the design specialists, the World Bank's independent consultants and the consulting
firm for the Bridges Team evaluated the bridge's economic impact. Both Mongla and Payra's
seaports will be operational. Domestic and foreign visitors would swarm to new and historic tourist
destinations including Kuakata Beach in the southern region, the Sundarbans, Bangabandhu Mazar
in Tungipara, and old and new resorts at Mawa and Jazira as the tourism industry will prosper.
Upon opening the bridge, traffic would more than double, and the number of cars will increase by
7-8% year, reaching 67,000 by the year 2050.

Advantages of communication and transportation

The south-west of Bangladesh contains 27% of the nation's total land area, according to the Asian
Development Bank (ADB). The old roads have reportedly been upgraded, and motorways on both
sides of the Padma Bridge have reportedly been constructed for a total of Tk11,000 crore.
Therefore, opening the bridge will significantly improve transportation there.
The Padma Bridge will be able to transport 24,000 vehicles per day in 2024, and 67,000 by 2050,
according to an ADB source. The Padma Bridge will also cut the distance between Mongla Port
and Dhaka substantially. Many working hours will be saved by elevating the Mongla port's
significance in the movement of goods and enhancing connectivity between Dhaka and the south,
accelerating the country's economic growth.
Trade across the nation is anticipated to rise with the opening of the Padma Bridge. In 21 southwest
districts, experts foresee an industrial revolution, especially in the year after the opening of the
double-decker bridge.
The journey from Dhaka to Kolkata via Jessore will be shortened in half once the Padma Bridge
Rail Link project is complete, increasing the country's exports. Additionally, after the bridge is
finished, it will reduce the cost of online services, power, and gasoline, increasing the area's current
trade.
The entire economy of the nation will be impacted by the overall output of the transport, trade, and
local industrialization centered around the Padma Bridge as well as by GDP growth. Based on the
current base year, a BRAC study predicts that in 31 years, the contribution to GDP will be 5%.
The Padma Bridge has evolved from a simple steel construction into a symbol of Bangladesh's
potential, economic success, and national sentiments.
Padma bridge will alter economic circumstances by millions in the southwest district.
Padma Bridge 13

The economic potential of the Padma Bridge is important to change the fates of millions of people
of the southwestern parts of Bangladesh as the much-awaited bridge will connect more than 30
million people of 21 Southern districts, economists said today.
The operation of the bridge will help quick transportation of goods like industrial raw materials,
agricultural products, transportation of people and reduction of time in communication between
the capital city and the rest of the southern parts of the country.
They claimed that the Padma Bridge should not be viewed as only a means of transit because it
has significant economic potential.
The economists predicted that the completion of the Bangabandhu Multipurpose Bridge over the
Jamuna River will alter the lives of millions of people in Bangladesh's north.
Sadly, the economic potential of the bridge was not leveraged to the required level, therefore the
destinies of millions of residents of the Northern regions could not be changed.

Potential benefits of Padma Bridge in Tourism Business

Despite having enormous potential, Bangladesh's tourist sector is still underdeveloped, especially
in the south of the nation. The tourism sector will probably grow along with improved
communication with the south brought about by the Padma Bridge.
Bangladeshis take great pride in the Padma Bridge. We heartily extend our congratulations to the
Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her effective management and contribution to the
building of the Padma Bridge while overcoming all the challenges.
The Padma Bridge represents independent Bangladesh's pinnacle achievement in many aspects.
The bridge will significantly benefit Bangladesh's tourism industry, which accounts for around 4%
of the country's GDP. On the bank of the Padma River, it is anticipated that hotels, motels, resorts,
museums, and many other structures will be constructed.
But the appropriate and deliberate growth of the tourism industry is the foundation for the success
of this sector. Both five-star hotels and amusement parks of worldwide standards can be built by
us. There are many beautiful places to visit in Bangladesh, from Teknaf to Tentulia.
We are still unable to utilize this sector as much as other nations in the world, despite the tourism
industry's enormous potential.
The potential for the growth of the tourism sector was enhanced with the construction of the Padma
Bridge. The inadequate communication infrastructure and lack of security posed the main
challenges to the growth of the tourism industry.
This shortcoming has already been partially remedied thanks to the Padma Bridge, and the growth
of the tourism sector appears inevitable given the revolutionary changes in communication
management that have already connected 21 districts in the southern part of the country to the rest
of the country.
The tourism sector has been selected by nations all over the world as an economic tool to bolster
and simplify their national economies. However, we weren't prioritizing the growth of this sector.
However, with the opening of the Padma Bridge, a fresh chance to grow the tourism sector appears.
Padma Bridge 14

Due to the tourist hubs' lack of planned development, the government has been deprived of money
from this industry for a long time. Rangamati, Sylhet, and Cox's Bazar were regarded as the top
tourist destinations. However, due to weak communications, a number of locations in southern
Bengal were unable to draw both domestic and foreign tourists.
We can develop Patuakhali as a tourist destination in the same way that Goa, the popular tourist
destination in India, has. If we carefully develop the tourism sector in these areas, the Padma
Bridge can transform the lives and livelihoods of the people of the south of Bangladesh and provide
economic prosperity.
For the tourism sector, the government should have a vision and master plan. The sector may be
able to contribute roughly 30% of the nation's GDP with careful planning and development.
The growth of the tourism business is inevitable in a nation that boasts world heritage sites like
the Sundarbans mangrove forest, the world's longest beach, and numerous other tourist attractions.
As we can see, the primary tourist attractions are the Eiffel Tower in Paris or the River Thames in
London. By using such worldwide branding, we must spread awareness of Padma Bridge.
The Padma Bridge should be recognized as nothing less than a "Engineering Marvel" by the entire
globe. According to rumors, the Trans-Asian Express Highway will be connected to the Padma
Bridge.
The development of trained labor in this industry, in addition to physical and infrastructural
development, is, in my opinion, another important component. Eleven locations are part of a
master plan being created by the Bangladesh Tourism Board.
There are also architectural, structural, and investment plans for some significant locations. Barisal
and Khulna's tourist attractions would be given precedence among these.
I believe a proper execution of the proposed Padma Bridge-based tourism business will
significantly affect Bangladesh's economy. However, the growth of the tourism sector will
necessitate careful planning, the creation of sizable tourism facilities, and political stability.
I am confident that the growth of the tourism sector would elevate Bangladesh to a special position
in the globe, barring a big natural calamity or significant global recession. This bridge will be
useful in that regard. In 2022,

Contributes of Padma Multipurpose Bridge in GDP

The Padma Bridge will primarily contribute to the economic growth of Bangladesh. According to
economists, the country's GDP will increase by 1.3 to 2 percent annually. The bridge project will
add an additional 1% to the GDP after the railway portion is finished. By 2055, the bridge project
is anticipated to contribute 5% of Bangladesh's GDP.
According to Zahid Hossain, a lead economist for the World Bank, the Padma Bridge will reduce
travel time for about 27% of Bangladesh's population by 100 km, boosting commerce and
agriculture and raising the GDP of the nation. (The Daily Star, 2022)
Padma Bridge 15

GDP Increase
The country's total economy will be impacted by the economic output of the transportation,
trading, and regional industrial revolution centered around the Padma Bridge as well as GDP
growth. The opening of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge is anticipated to boost the nation's GDP
by between 1.3 and 2 percent annually, according to a story in the Dhaka Tribune. The GDP will
also increase by an additional 1% with the completion of the Padma Bridge Rail Link project.

Source: Website of Business Inspection

A BRAC analysis predicts a 5 percent contribution to GDP in 31 years based on the present base
year. But when the bridge is finished, it will boost the GDP of the nation by 1.2 percent.
Bangladesh will have the 20th-highest GDP growth in the world in 2022, according to the IMF
prediction. The Padma Bridge will be one of the factors in Bangladesh's advancement to third
place in this ranking in 2026. (Sohag, 2022)

Estimated Macro-Economic Benefits: Annual National GDP Will Increase by 0.56PC

The post-establishment period of the Padma bridge is supposed to bolster our economy in many
ways. A series of analyses provide a forecast of what is to come. The long-term road user’s benefit
was calculated using the traffic model. This was based on the savings or vehicle operation cost and
savings in travel time cost. The estimation stood at 1,295,840 million BDT ($18,512 million) over
Padma Bridge 16

the 31 years. Moreover, there were simulation tests conducted based on a Social Accounting
Matrix (SAM) which signified the indirect impact of the Padma bridge over a 31-year timeline.

Source: LightCastle
Two simulations resulted in a 100% and a 70% investment stimulus felt in the southwest region
over a direct injection of $2.1 billion into the regional economy. This would add a value of about
453,670 million BDT over a 31-year period which draws a 10.6% growth. Annually this rate would
be 0.33% of the national base GDP. To sum up, if we add the value generated from the traffic
model with the estimation of the SAM model the total project benefit is estimated to be 1,749,510
million BDT or 24993 million USD over 31 years assuming 31 years as the full realization
timeframe of the project benefit. The first simulation also conveyed that the construction of the
Padma bridge would lead to a reduction in annual poverty headcount at the national level by 0.84%
and at the regional level by 1.01%. This intricate analysis suggests how big an increment the
macroeconomy will receive. (Samin Mahmud Khan, 2021)

Potential Benefits of Transport Business

After the bridge's opening on June 25, Shariatpur transportation industry is expected to undergo
significant changes, according to the district's transportation owners. Shariatpur is one of the two
districts connected by the Padma Bridge.
Direct road communication will be established between Shariatpur and Dhaka following the
bridge's opening. The district's bus companies have already spent over Tk300 crore to launch new
buses over the Padma Bridge beginning on the first day of vehicular traffic on the bridge in order
to benefit from the direct road communication system.
This correspondent recently paid a visit to the Shariatpur Municipality bus station and saw that
development for new buses is already well under way. The bus bodywork has Volvo, Ashok
Leyland, and Tata automobile chassis fitted. Bus bodies are also being built in Dhaka and Savar
in addition to Shariatpur.
Local passengers, however, are dubious about the quality of the buses that are manufactured in
their area. According to them, the buses operating on the district's regional routes are subpar and
some are even unsafe for travel.
They pleaded with the relevant authorities to establish a uniform transit system along the Dhaka-
Shariatpur route.
Padma Bridge 17

The Shariatpur-Dhaka and Shariatpur-Narayanganj lines will soon be served by direct buses,
according to the district bus owners' association. Shariatpur Super Service, Shariatpur Padma
Travels, Shariatpur Paribahan, and Glory Paribahan are the organizations.
New buses will be introduced by each business along the routes. Shariatpur Padma Travels and
Shariatpur Paribahan are two of these businesses that travel between Dhaka and Mawa. 300 buses
have been getting ready by all companies primarily for crossing the Padma Bridge. Each bus costs
between Tk 80 and Tk 90 lakh to build. Transport owners have invested close to Tk 300 crore in
this. (UNB, 2022)

Benefit of socio-economic impact of Padma multipurpose bridge

The Padma Bridge is a distinctive representation of Bengali self-worth and independence. The
long-cherished and highly anticipated Padma Bridge is now a reality rather than just a fantasy.
As a result, the news of the Padma Bridge's opening shocks the entire country. According to
information, the bridge would be put into service the day after the inauguration. If the bridge is
built, Dhaka will have direct access to 21 districts in the area.
For a variety of reasons, the Padma Bridge is a marvel of the world. It will be able to significantly
alter the nation's economic dynamics. Leading economists and businessmen in the nation have
referred to the bridge as a "game changer" for the economy. The country's GDP will grow by 2.5
percent if the Padma Bridge's rail and road portions are both opened. The Padma Bridge will have
a significant impact on the economy of the nation and alter its course. The speakers at a recent
conversation on the topic of "Importance of Padma Bridge in National Economy" at the Sonargaon
Hotel in the capital claimed that the economy will improve overall.

Conclusion
The Padma, which had been long awaited and treasured, set out on its trip on June 25, 2022, with
fresh prospects and perspectives. not just for Bangladesh but for the entire planet. The
construction of the Padma Bridge adds a new level of connectedness for the social, industrial,
commercial, agricultural, and regional trade sectors. These triumphs won't happen by accident,
though. similar to the Jamuna Bridge. Padma Plus coverage must be purchased in order to
receive the benefits of Padma Bridge. Planning investments and business expenses must be cut
back on at the same time. To do this, a technical committee must be established.
The Padma Bridge will result in the creation of 10 lakh new entrepreneurs in certain areas over
the next five years and 30–40 lakh new entrepreneurs over the course of ten years. In the next ten
years, 500–1000 new factories will be built in 6 districts of the Barisal division. As a result, the
economy of the nation will grow by 10 to 20 thousand crore takas. With the opening of this
bridge, there would be an increase in tourists from India and Nepal. The tourism sector will
undergo a change. The bridge will result in a 1.01 percent decrease in poverty for those living in
the southwest of the nation. Poverty will be eliminated entirely on a national level.
The pressure on Dhaka and other major cities will be lessened by the availability of energy, gas,
and healthcare. The Padma Bridge would directly benefit 30 million people, according to the
Padma Bridge 18

World Bank. Agricultural items will be priced fairly. The price of producing agricultural goods
will go down. Industries based on Argo will grow. With the help of this bridge, West Bengal
would be able to communicate with Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Arunachal
Pradesh, Nepal, and Bhutan. They will therefore exploit this bridge as an economic route to
generate foreign currency. A direct road and train link will be created as a result of the bridge. As
a result, Mongla, Payra, and Asian will result in shorter travel distances.
The Padma Bridge is more than just a bridge; it represents the honor of Bangladesh. People can
only dream and be fulfilled by a successful leader. The bridge will significantly alter life in the
southwest of the nation. Regional imbalances will be lessened via this bridge. GDP growth will
rise if inequality is removed. That benefit will be extended to the entire nation, including those
who live in that area.
