Marie Curie was a Polish and French physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity. She was born in Poland in 1867 and moved to France for university education, as women were not admitted to universities in Poland at the time. In 1898, Marie and her husband Pierre Curie discovered the elements radium and polonium. For this work, they received the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics. Marie received the 1911 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. She died in 1934 from aplastic anemia caused by exposure to radiation during her scientific research.

Marie Curie

Marie Curie was born on November 7th, 1867 in Warsaw, Poland,

which was then under the Russian rule. Her parents were teachers who
valued education. But women in Poland could not get university degrees.
So, Maria and her sister, Bronislawa, saved enough money to study in
France. In 1891 Maria entered the Sorbonne, a university in Paris.

Within three years, Marie obtained degrees in physics and math. She
began working with a French scientist, Pierre Curie, whom she married in
1895. Marie began studying radioactivity, and their use in medicine. In
1898 the Curies discovered radium and polonium. They named polonium
after Marie’s homeland of Poland. In 1903 the Curies won the Nobel
Prize for Physics and In 1911, she won another Nobel Prize for
Chemistry.

Marie did not realize that working with radioactive material could
make her ill. She died of leukemia, a type of cancer, on July 4, 1934.
