Week 1 Reflection

Claire Farrington documented the key events of her first week as an intern at W4C, including creating template letters urging support for various bills and updating W4C's organization database. She enjoyed the flexibility to work remotely part of the week but also appreciated being in the office. While adjusting to long periods at a computer, she found stretching and posture breaks helpful. Creating the letter template involved research on bills and stances, while updating the database was monotonous and required frequent breaks. Overall, she looked forward to completing her assigned tasks.

Intern: Claire Farrington Week: 1

Purpose: This weekly reflection is documentation to supplement the time log. The Intern will
record “events” and personal reflections on the experiences that occurred each week. Submit
the weekly Reflection in the Google folder linked in Canvas.
I. Events: In the table, list and briefly describe the key “events” of the week. These
include any assignments, duties, errands, observations, projects, tasks, etc. Identify
the Learning Domain(s) and Competency that most closely aligns with each event(s),
if at all. It is possible a particular event does not align with any domain or
competency.

Event Brief Description Learning Domains,

Competencies
Love Letters For this assignment, I had to create template
to Legislators letters to legislators urging their support for
various bills. It involved researching applicable
bills and why they are important.
Updating This involved researching Indiana organizations in
Organization order to make sure we have an accurate and up to
Database date database with their contact information and
relevance to W4C

II. Reflection: after documenting the various events of the week, reflect on your
experiences and summarize in a comprehensive essay. There should be explicit
connections with Events in Section I.

This week I enjoyed the flexibility of this experience. The entire W4C staff works from home on
Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, which is nice because I can change the environment I work in
which keeps me focused and motivated. This flexibility is very valuable to me and has helped
ease my mind about fitting everything in this semester. Despite this, I also enjoy being able to
work in the office with everyone. It is fun to talk to all the other interns about what they are
working on and how they are doing. While I am enjoying the work I am doing I am having
trouble adjusting to working on my computer for many hours at a desk. I have trouble looking at
screens and focusing for prolonged periods of time so have had to make sure that I get up to
move around every half hour and make sure I have good sitting posture where possible. Over
my first few days, I have been working on two main things. The first is a letter template for an
upcoming event called “Love Letters to Legislators” and the second is updating W4C’s
organization database. Creating the letter template has involved researching bills,
understanding their importance, and determining W4C’s stance on them. From this I have
created sample letters that members of the public will use to guide the writing of their own

letters to legislators. Updating the database, although easy, has been quite monotonous. I find
that I get bored pretty easily doing this and need to take frequent breaks to stay focused. I will
feel very accomplished when I have finally finished it!
