Protein Structure and Function Guide

Proteins are macromolecules composed of amino acid chains linked by peptide bonds. Their structure is correlated with their function. Protein structure can be described at four levels - primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary. Primary structure refers to the linear sequence of amino acids. Secondary structure describes recurring patterns like alpha helices and beta pleated sheets. Tertiary structure describes the 3D folding of the polypeptide chain formed by interactions like hydrogen bonds and disulfide bridges. Quaternary structure refers to the arrangement of multiple polypeptide subunits that assemble to form a functional protein.
