Driving Lesson – Part-4
10) Wheel Turning:
1) The sense of the distance of the vehicle/pedestrian on the left and right of the car which we are
driving, should determine the extent to which we can go to the left or right. This must be constantly
in our mind, as we drive vehicle.
2) If the vehicle in-front is close, turn steering fully.
3) If our vehicle is parked, and if the vehicle in front is very close, in neutral fully turn wheel and then
move. (Turning the wheel fully in neutral is required often when we take reverse and park the
vehicle).
4) If the vehicle in-front is not very close/away slowly turn wheel in steps, and straighten.
5) In two hands driving:
a. Hand position the left and right hand shall be in 9 ‘o clock and 3 ‘o clock position.
b. To turn left – push-pull method: Push wheel and move right-hand to top position, bring left-
hand close to right-hand, and pull steering with left hand to bottom position. Now bring
right-hand near left hand in the bottom position, and push wheel to move right-hand to top
position.
c. To turn right – push-pull method: Push wheel and move left-hand to top position, bring
right-hand closer to left hand, and pull steering with right hand to bottom position. Now
bring left-hand near right-hand in the bottom position, and push wheel to move left-hand
to top position.
d. One hand crossing the other is not permitted in this RTO exams.
11) Breaking
1) Always close the clutch and before applying break
2) Apply break softly/slowly
3) Softly apply break before a speed-breaker
4) If there are two speed-breakers successively at a road cross-section, softly apply break for the first
speed-breaker, for the next speed-breaker no need to apply break, just roll the car with clutch full-
close.
5) Softly apply break, if the vehicle in-front is too close for comfort (Go on rolling the car, don’t stop
unless necessary)
6) Softly apply break, when we are approaching signal. Two feet before the stationary vehicle,
completely apply break.
12) Stopping and starting at signal
1) Close clutch fully, while approaching a signal
2) Softly apply break, when we are approaching signal.
3) Two feet before the stationary vehicle, completely apply break.
4) Change gear to neutral, then change to first gear, as a preparation to move the vehicle.
5) When the break is fully applied, Half open the clutch, or open the clutch to reach the biting point.
This is a preparation for moving the vehicle.
6) Once the green signal is given, fully release the break, so the car will move in a comfortable
controlled speed. Later follow the steps given in “speed control using clutch”.
7) Close clutch fully, change to second gear
8) Fully release clutch and use accelerator as required to move ahead.
