Research plan
Proposed Study Title: Utilizing the abundancy of paragis (Eleusine Indica) fibre as source for paper
production
Name of Student: Julius S. Balanquit
A. QUESTIONS OR PROBLEMS BEING ADDRESSED
Deforestation causes many problems such as soil erosion, climate change, loss of food and habitat of
animals which may lead to their extinction. In addition to deforestatn, the paper manufacturing process can
also lead to air and water pollution. Chemicals used in the process can contaminate water sources, leading
to water quality issues, and can also contribute to air pollution through the release of greenhouse gases and
other pollutants. In school, students waste too much papers. Some unwanted writings even on the unwritten
paper causes them to consider it as a garbage and throws it away which is a huge waste to the students
themselves, the paper industry and the country’s economy.
B. GOALS / EXPECTED OUTCOME
The objective of this research is to assess the suitability of producing an eco-friendly papers using low-cost
raw materials by mean of fibre from paragis (Eleusine Indica).
C. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURES
MATERIALS PURPOSE
Paragis Grass Main Ingredient of the
Study
Baking Soda / Bleach Independent Variable
Container Is where the paper is
pressed
Mortar And Pestle To pound the the pulp
Gloves, Hairnet, and Lab PPE (Personal Protective
gown Equipment)
Pen and Notes For taking notes
Stopwatch For timer
Measuring Cup For measurements
Pot For Boiling
Stirring Rod For Stirring
Procedures:
Collect paragis grass then boil it.
Add baking soda or bleach
Let it boil for 2 hours
Drain the boiled water and separate the pulp
Use mortar and pestle for pressing and keep the pulp as thin as possible
Let it dry for 24 hours
Test the paper’s properties
