Statement of purpose

Sri Venkata Anandavalli Nallapati

Applying for: Master’s in Biomedical Science

Since I was a child, I was constantly exposed to two factors- Sports and Science. I was
encouraged to pursue a career in Tennis by my father, who has always been my support
system. I started my journey at a local sports club and with the passing of time, I competed in
several State and National level tournaments under AITA (All India Tennis Association) and
represented my college as the team captain for Lawn Tennis, bagging considerable amount of
success. The specialty of inspiration is that it can come from anywhere and anytime. This
holds particularly true for me because, as a Sixteen-year-old, I watched a documentary on
Biomedical advances where they discussed about the idea to evoke memory in the cells to
produce an innate immunity against a certain virus and I was fascinated on how in the coming
years Bio medicine can play a major role in numerous specialties from Understanding the
Biology of Human health to finding a cure to major illnesses. Although I enjoyed tennis, the
mystery behind Science intrigued me.

I always enjoyed studying biology at the school and absorbing a drop of this ocean did not
quench my thirst the curiosity to understand the science behind tiny molecules made me eager
to learn more, as a result, I choose a triple major course- Genetics, Chemistry and Zoology in
my Under Graduation. Driven by the desire to learn more I started diving deep into the
concepts. In college, Medical and molecular genetics were two subjects that piqued my
curiosity. I realized that a pragmatic approach to learning various aspects will foster my
understanding of the subject, I got an opportunity to attend a training workshop on Laboratory
diagnosis procedures that gave insights into the diagnosis of G6PD in new-borns, PCR, and
other biotechnological techniques at the Hospital for Genetic Diseases, OU. During this time,
I was constantly surrounded by little kids suffering from autoimmune and other disorders and
my interaction with them touched me, and the natural curiosity in me urged me to learn and
understand more about biology at its cellular and molecular level.

During my Internship at the Telangana State Forensic Science laboratory, I worked on

"Establishing Human Identity from Biological Samples Using DNA-Based Techniques" at the
DNA wing as the only undergraduate student on the research team. Although I enjoyed
working in the wet lab, I discovered that I lacked knowledge of Computational Biology. This
motivated me to seek a postgraduate diploma in bioinformatics to broaden my expertise.
Coming from life sciences background I put in determined efforts to learn computational
tools for protein modelling and docking studies and eventually prepared a full-fledged thesis
on ‘In Silico Studies on Cytotoxic T-Lymphocyte associated protein 4’ Consequently, I
started working on another project based on ‘Tumour Necrosis Factor’ which is under the
process of publication.

As an Outspoken person, I took part in various Model United Nations conferences. While I
have had a share of defining moments in my life, the one which stands out was my
appointment as the captain of the college Tennis team. I gave my best efforts in all the trades
I was involved in. This may be the reason that sometimes there was an off in balance because
of constant traveling for tournaments, but soon, I gained control and pushed myself to be
good at both, especially during my final semesters which reaped me an ‘A’ grade in my core
subjects and a bronze medal as my last win for the college.
Moving forward, In the age of globalization, it is crucial to have a broad and refined global
outlook. Biomedical Science Program will assist me in procuring hands-on training in the
laboratory skills that today's bioscience employers demand. The United States of America
boasts an excellent cultural atmosphere, Scientific Research and Technological
advancements. Compared to well-developed countries, in India, the field of Life Sciences is at
its early stages of growth prospect, which shows the dire future need for competent
professionals. For these reasons, I hope to acquire master’s degree in the USA and learn from
reputable professors with outstanding facilities. In such environment, I will be constantly
exposed to skills and ideas that will enable me to pursue my dream to research with virtually
unlimited potential.

Finally, the most important factor that could bridge the gap between my skills and my dreams
is the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Here, I found the right curriculum for Master of
Biomedical science with courses like concepts in cancer, Molecular Pathology. My search for
a better match of objectives, passion and dreams has ended here because of the best
fundamental research in all avenues of Biological Sciences you offer. I believe the best part
about studying science is the abundant knowledge that is always waiting to be explored, thus,
requiring a commitment to being a lifelong student, a role that I currently love and look
forward to continuing at this University. I have gathered all my dreams and tied them up in a
unique goal and I am sure that the quality knowledge and impeccable guidance from the
professors of your University, will help me achieve my goals. I feel I am well equipped to
enter the MS Biomedical Science program as my goals are a good match for what University
has to offer. I wish to benefit the University and myself by my active participation in various
programs in and around the field of study, which will be a contribution to the department.
Therefore, with the knowledge I possess and desire to explore, toggled with my leadership
abilities, I hope to accomplish my dream of being a scientist at economically and socially
important organizations as I want to work with my highest potential and give something back
to society through Science. I sincerely hope that the admission committee discovers my
potential and gives me a chance to be a part of the esteemed university.
