Chapter I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Paper has been an integral part of human life since ancient times. It has been
used to record important events, create works of art, and store information. Even in the
digital age, paper still plays an important role in people’s lives. Paper is a versatile tool
that can help them stay organized and productive. It also serves as a reminder of their
past experiences and helps them preserve memories for future generations. Paper is
more than just a physical object; it is an invaluable asset that connects people to their
past and shapes their future. It is essential for writing, drawing, and printing documents.
It is also used for packaging and many other applications. Paper can be recycled into
new products or reused in creative ways. Its versatility makes it a valuable material that
can be used in many different contexts. From business cards to books to art projects.
Paper is an invaluable asset that can help people communicate their ideas more
effectively.
Recycling paper is an important step towards protecting the environment and
preserving the world's finite resources. It helps to reduce the number of trees to be cut
down for paper production, reduces air and water pollution, conserves energy, and
prevents landfill waste from entering our ecosystems. By recycling paper, they can also
save money by reducing the need to buy new paper products. Recycling paper is a
simple way to help protect the planet and conserve natural resources for future
generations. Recycling paper can have a positive impact on the environment. Recycling
paper helps to reduce carbon footprint and makes a positive contribution towards
preserving the planet. This research study aims to create a scented paper. When the
scent is added to paper, it stimulates more senses, such as the sense of smell or the
olfactory receptor that is located in the nose. Through touch and smell, this creates an
even stronger impression on the consumer. Paper is a valuable material that can be used
and recycled to create new products. It will become a new product that provides
relaxation to those who can afford it by using recycled paper and adding scent to it. The
use of scented paper has been gaining attraction in recent years, as it can add an extra
layer of appeal to a printed document.
Scented paper has the potential to increase engagement with readers and make
them more likely to remember what they have read. It is also beneficial for businesses
that want to stand out from their competitors and make their documents more attractive.
With its ability to evoke positive emotions in readers, scented paper can be used as an
effective marketing tool. Coffee-scented paper is a great way to add a unique touch to
your writing and document-making projects. It has a pleasant aroma that will remind
you of your favorite coffee shop and bring back fond memories. With its unique scent,
it can be used for various purposes, such as making cards, scrapbooks, or even letters.
Coffee-scented paper can also be used in aromatherapy to help you relax and unwind
after a long day. Whether you are looking for a creative way to express yourself or just
need something special to add an extra touch of warmth, coffee-scented paper is a
perfect choice.
Background of the Study
Paper is an integral part of every people’s daily life; it provides the means of
recording, storing, and distributing information (Quader, 2011). Paper is as important
as mobile phones. The papers are important as well, especially to students and every
professional out there. Books, newspapers, magazines, and notebooks are some
products made from paper. It is estimated that approximately 300 million tons of paper
are produced every year globally. This staggering amount of paper production is
equivalent to cutting down around four billion trees annually. The United States alone
produces about 70 million tons of paper each year. Despite the digital age, where most
information and communication are done electronically, the demand for paper
continues to rise due to various industries' reliance on it.
Paper is an essential need but it also endangers the health of people and earth.
A sum of around 300 million tons of paper are delivered every day and 90% of this
paper is created from mature pulp (conventional method) (Alam et al., 2018). As
indicated by the report on Ecology Global Network, the utilization of paper has become
more than 400% in the past 40 years globally. Presently in every continent, paper
industries use almost 4 billion trees, or 35% of the total trees cut throughout the world.
The misuse of natural resources has come closer to the limits of the earth's capacity.
This research will help humans and the planet in preventing earth from baldness.
Recycling paper is an easy and effective way to help the environment. When people
recycle paper, they also reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, conserving
valuable natural resources such as trees, water, and energy. Turning recycled paper into
new ones also helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that are released during the
production of the new paper. The recycling process involves collecting used paper and
breaking it down into fibers. These fibers are then cleaned, and mixed with water and
chemicals to remove ink and other impurities. The resulting mixture is then pressed and
dried to create new sheets of paper.
Statement of the Problem
This research project aims to investigate the feasibility of creating coffee-scented paper
from recycled paper and coffee residue and to know if it’s an eco-friendly alternative
to traditional papers. To acquire all of the necessary knowledge, information, and data,
the researchers attempted to respond to the following relevant question:
1. What characteristics will be scented paper made from recycled paper have?
2. How has scented paper become an eco-friendly alternative to traditional papers?
3. How effective is scented paper, especially when used for writing?
4. What kind of coffee beans will produce a long-lasting aroma?
• Arabica
• Liberica or Robusta
Objectives
This research project will focus on “Investigating the Feasibility of Creating Coffee-
Scented Paper from Recycled Paper and Coffee Residue: An Eco-Friendly Alternative
to Traditional Paper”
Main Purpose: This research project aims to produce a scented paper.
• To investigate the feasibility of creating coffee-scented paper from recycled
paper and coffee residue.
• To determine whether this eco-friendly alternative to traditional paper is a viable
option.
• To encourage people to recycle waste papers, such as white paper.
Significance of the Study
This research study will outline the investigation of the feasibility of creating
coffee-scented paper from recycled paper and coffee residue. The researchers in this
study consider that the findings will be beneficial not just to them but also to others:
The Environment
This research project will benefit the environment due to the materials used to
make scented paper are recycled paper and coffee residue. The use of recycled paper
and coffee residue as raw materials for paper production has the potential to reduce the
amount of waste produced by the paper industry and contribute to a more sustainable
and eco-friendly approach to paper manufacturing.
The users of papers
This research project will give a new experience to the users of paper, as the
scent of coffee on paper can provide a unique sensory experience for them, making it
an attractive alternative to traditional paper products.
The people that love the aroma of coffee
People who love coffee also love the aroma of it because it helps them relax and
feel good when they are stressed. This research project will benefit them because they
will discover something that can be used with the scent of their favorite aroma, which
is coffee.
Hypothesis
This research project will determine if creating coffee-scented paper from recycled
paper and coffee residue is a feasible and eco-friendly alternative to traditional paper.
Null Hypothesis
There is no feasibility in creating coffee-scented paper from recycled paper and
coffee residue, and it’s not an eco-friendly alternative to traditional paper.

Figure 1: Conceptual Model of the Study
Figure 1 shows the conceptual model of the study on the effectiveness of coffee-
scented paper made from recycled paper. When paper is being prepared for use in a
research study, it is "conditioned," which is the act of exposing it to a particular
environment or water content. Before being used in an experiment, the paper must be
in a consistent and stable state in order for the results to be reliable and reproducible.
The first frame presents the input of the study, which includes the material that
we need to use and where the material was taken.
The second frame presents the process of the study, which involves describing
step-by-step how the researchers can make coffee-scented paper and how it will be
processed.
The third frame presents the output of the study, which includes the product
name of this research project.
Theoretical Framework
This study is supported by the theory of recycling waste paper into usable boards
developed by Usama J. Naeem and Safaa A. S. Almtori. Recycling waste paper into
beneficial for plants and the environment, as it protects the forest and eliminates waste
that harms the environment. This research is focusing on the manufacturing of usable
boards from waste paper. This study emphasizes the importance of waste paper and
how it can help the environment and individuals. Similarly, to the topic of our research,
the goal of this is to reduce tree cutting and protect our ecosystem. It also removes waste
that is harmful to the environment. The other materials required to create the usable
board are similar to those required to create coffee-scented paper, such as waste paper.
The second theory was annotated on January 28, 2013, in Study Bolsters:
Quantum Vibration Scent Theory by Mark Anderson; according to the theory, two
competing camps of scientists were at odds over how the sense of smell works.
According to the vibration theory, our noses detect the vibrations of odor molecules by
using tiny currents of electrons rather than infrared photons. According to the dominant
theory of smell, our noses contain a wide variety of receptors, and each of them prefers
to bind with specific types of molecules. This theory and the current study of the
researcher are linked because scent is important in people's lives and can aid in the
identification of anything using smell. Furthermore, some people love the aroma of
coffee because it can help them relax.
Scope and Delimitation
The goal of this research is to assess the effectiveness of using scented paper for
recycling. This research will concentrate on three main areas: understanding the current
recycling methods and processes, analyzing the environmental and economic impacts,
and identifying potential opportunities for using scented paper for recycling. This study
will use both primary and secondary sources, such as surveys and literature reviews. In
terms of delimitation, this study will not cover the manufacturing process of scented
paper, instead focusing solely on its use in recycling operations. Furthermore, this study
will not make recommendations on how to use scented paper in specific recycling
operations.
