The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised the alert level of Mayon Volcano from Alert Level 1 to Alert Level 3 due to an increase in rockfall events and the potential for a hazardous eruption. PHIVOLCS warned of the dangers of pyroclastic density currents, lava flows, and rockfalls within weeks or days in the 6km permanent danger zone, prompting evacuations. A few days later, PHIVOLCS raised the alert level further to Alert Level 5 as an eruption was underway, emitting pyroclastic flows and extensive ashfall. Thousands of villagers had evacuated to shelters as Mayon Volcano spewed ash and lava.

Here with me the PHIVOLCS’ Undersecretary; Mr. Junnel Arancis to explain and discuss what happened
and what’s happening in the Mayon Volcano.

(DARAGA ALBAY) ARANCIS: Mayon Volcano is exhibiting magmatic eruption of a summit lava dome, with
increased chances of lava flow and hazardous pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) or the most hazardous
events to local areas during explosive volcanic eruptions, affecting the upper to middle slopes of the
volcano with potential explosive activity within weeks or days.

VIAJEDOR: Thank you Mr. Undersecretary . It is therefore recommended that the 6km permanent
danger zone shall be evacuated due to the danger of PDCs, lava flows, rockfalls and other volcanic
hazards. PHIVOLCS also added earlier today that the Philippine Army Personnel are putting efforts on
convincing residents to evacuate. Nicolette, we’ll continue to monitor the situation here in Albay.

CASTRO: Thank you very much Alecxie, stay safe. That’s Alecxie Viajedor reporting live from Albay.

(MAIN STUDIO) CASTRO: Thank you, Dianne. Now, let us know the evacuees condition, reporting to us
by NYC’s news anchor May Mulig.

(EVACUATION CENTER) MULIG; Nicolette, the Mayon Volcano is been spewing ash and lava for the past
days, prompting the mass evacuation of thousands of villagers such as the Family of Mark and Shella
Miranda, who are now staying at this evacuation center.

MULIG: Thousands of Filipinos live below Mayon just depend on agriculture for their livelihood. Hence,
the province of Albay is considered the most prepared when it comes to emergency response, still, they
doubt if the preparation will be enough for the nature’s unbridled fury.
