Vocational Training Council

This project involves designing an improved HVAC system for a commercial building in Quarry Bay using demand-controlled ventilation. The student will assist engineers from Carrier in analyzing the existing system, selecting and designing a new system, and providing recommendations. Key deliverables will include a site analysis, system design calculations, equipment selection, drawings, and a proposal. The student will apply knowledge from various engineering and design modules. Design thinking approaches like empathy, defining problems, and prototyping solutions will be used. Professional ethics around confidentiality and intellectual property will also be followed.

Project Title: Elevating HVAC Efficiency and Indoor Air Quality in a Commercial building

1. Project overview and Deliverable5

A Commercial building is located in Quarry Bay, with traditional ventilation system often
operate at a constant airflow rate, regardless of the actual occupancy levels in the
building. This can lead to unnecessary energy consumption and over-ventilation during
periods of reduced occupancy, resulting in wasted energy and increased operational costs.
Also, during periods of high occupancy, it may not be adequately adjusted to meet the
changing occupancy levels. This can result in suboptimal indoor air quality

By implementing a CO2-based demand-controlled ventilation system, The demand-

controlled ventilation system adjusts the airflow rates based on real-time occupancy and
CO2 levels, ensuring that ventilation is provided only when needed. This targeted
approach can result in significant energy savings by avoiding over-ventilation during
periods of low occupancy. helps maintain optimal indoor air quality. It ensures that
sufficient fresh air is supplied to the occupied spaces, reducing the risk of indoor air
pollutants and creating a healthier environment for occupants.

Enhanced Comfort: Demand-controlled ventilation systems contribute to occupant

comfort by providing appropriate airflow rates based on occupancy levels. This helps
maintain a consistent and comfortable indoor environment throughout the building.

Environmental Sustainability: The reduction in energy consumption achieved through the

demand-controlled ventilation system contributes to the building's environmental
sustainability by lowering greenhouse gas emissions and reducing the overall carbon
footprint.

6. Your roles1 and responsibilities2 in the Project

The company staff is the engineers of Carrier, fully responsible for this club house /
restaurant project. IVE student, as an intern, supports the engineers to analyze the site
and design the heating system with the following responsibilities.

1. Site visit to collect information

1. Analyze the site situation such as the existing air-conditioning systems, the
heating sources and cooling sources, the special conditions due to offshore
location and the available space for installation
2. System selection, design calculation, equipment selection, etc. 4. Installation
consideration and the impact during installation
5. Create drawings and identify any clash problems.
