Contesting for the post of
General Secretary, Sports And Games
Technology Students’ Gymkhana
Indian Institute of Technology
2022-2023
Proposal 1: Introduction of IIT KHARAGPUR sports web portal
Aim of the program:
- To introduce a web portal for the following activities:-
● Synchronous update and subsequent archiving of Interhall, Inter IIT, Open IIT, and other
sports and games events.
● Booking online slots for Lawn Tennis, Badminton, Squash, Gym, Pool, and Swimming.
● Blog on affordable nutrition and diet that can be followed by students.
● Blogs from alumni sharing their experiences about the sporting culture of IIT Kharagpur.
● Contact details of vendors providing sports equipment.
● Providing video clips and highlights of the events on the web portal.
● Digitalization of the certificates.
Current Scenario:
● The present Technology Students’ Gymkhana’s website just provides the scorecard of
some selected sports.
● Slot booking process isn’t online and takes place through a tedious and long process.
● The process of issuing certificates is usually time taking, sometimes there are spelling
mistakes and sometimes the certificates are misplaced as well.
Workflow:
● Once the office bearers are elected, in consultation with the Tech coordinator and
Photography Secretary, the basic framework shall be prepared during the summer
breaks
● In July before the beginning of the session, the respective stakeholders shall be
contacted with the website, and slots and timings shall be updated
Benefits:
● With the advent of the IIT KHARAGPUR Sports Web Portal, paperwork and the
processing time of requests can be reduced.
● It shall create a more interactive and better sporting culture for freshers, who can take
weekly practice sessions with the players and experienced PTI of the Technology
Student Gymkhana.
● Participants in various events and games can save precious time because of the
digitalization of all the managerial aspects of the Technology Students’ Gymkhana. This
time can be used for sporting activities by the participants and can also help to increase
participation of the Ph.D. students.
● It would be easier to keep track of various games and events as all the information shall
be provided on the proposed web portal
Proposal 2: Basic facilities/amenities for women at sports
Aim of the program:
● To provide basic facilities like washrooms and changing rooms for women on various
grounds and courts.
● To improve the sanitation and hygiene level of pre-existing facilities.
Current scenario:
● Basic facilities like changing rooms are not available at Tata sports complex, Mahatma
Gandhi Stadium, Basketball and Volleyball courts.
● The washrooms are not properly cleaned and maintained, the level of hygiene is
sub-par.
● Basic amenities like hand washes and soaps are also not available.
Workflow :
● To maintain proper changing rooms and washrooms for girls at various sports grounds
and courts by coordinating with the Civil Construction and Maintenance Section.
● To coordinate with the maintenance staff and maintain a proper record of the chores
performed by the working staff to ensure a hygienic environment for the students
Benefits:
● This will lead to a better and hygienic ecosystem in the sports complexes.
● Changing rooms for women will provide them with much-needed personal space for
changing into their respective sports jerseys and kits.
● Hence, this shall in turn increase the participation of the women athletes and players in
the gymkhana-organized activities.
Proposal 3: To conduct a SWIMMING AND SURVIVAL SKILLS TRAINING CAMP to
provide basic swimming and survival skills for the entire academic year of 2022-2023
Aim of the program:
● The main objective of this program is to provide students with basic training in
swimming, which can be useful in times of emergency.
● To encourage and promote an interest in aquatics-related sports among the students.
Current scenario:
● Due to lack of proper maintenance and the recent COVID-19 pandemic, aquatic events
were all halted for a period of 2 years and hence many of the participants of the Inter-IIT
events have graduated or are about to be graduate, therefore encouraging and
promoting new players to represent the institute in future Inter-IIT events is necessary.
● Currently, no such camp is being organized in the institute and it is quite necessary to
take a step in this direction.
Workflow:
● Registration links would be provided to make a rough assessment of the number of
students willing to turn up for the camp.
● Swimming camps/workshops shall be conducted over the entire academic year in
about 6-7 short sessions of 4-5 days each.
● The camps would be organized under the aegis of the Technology Aquatics Society
(TAS).
● They would be supervised by the concerned PTI, trainers, and the senior players of
the Inter IIT aquatics team.
● The interested students would have to get themselves medically approved by the
doctors of BCROY Technology Hospital, the provision for which shall be made
flexible by contacting the concerned doctors.
● Each session would take a limited number of students to ensure smooth conduct.
(TIMELINE: Entire autumn semester, primarily in the month of July and August,
and Spring Semester, in April.)
Benefits:
● One of the major positives of this camp is that students shall be trained in swimming,
which itself is an important survival skill that can help students endure life-threatening
situations.
● This camp also aims to encourage and develop interest among students in swimming
which shall result in a rise in participation of students in aquatic events.
● To promote the idea of a safe and smart KGP community, an increase in awareness
and the ability to endure grave situations is necessary.
Proposal 4: Introduction to IIT KHARAGPUR Chess Festival
Aim of the program:
● Chess is one such sport that requires the power of thought and intelligent
decision-making to properly play the sport. However, despite being an Indian sport,
Chess rarely gets the attention of the general public.
● Introducing a festival that celebrates the sport of Chess will help in bringing about
general awareness and also uplift the culture in our campus.
Current scenario:
● There is a lack of availability of competition platforms for chess on our campus. As a
result, the players aren’t able to get match practice which has a direct impact on their
performance and leads to unnecessary wastage of time searching for other alternatives.
● From the general perspective, there has been a lack of participation by the students
due to a lack of opportunities. While the sports General Championship does a
commendable job towards the development of sports culture in college, most of the
students aren’t able to take part in the organized chess events.
Workflow:
● The idea firstly is to organize a 5-day Chess festival which shall include various players
matched against one another to win prize money, the current plan is to divide the
participating candidates as “ Open” which as the name suggests is open for all the
participants and “ Below 1600” which shall take into account the player’s chess rating
and pit them against one another.
● The expected number of participants is expected to be around 200 from all over India,
foreign players' participation is restricted owing to the changing covid conditions across
the world. Once the conditions improve, foreign participation too shall be welcomed with
open arms.
● The proposed entry fee is ₹3000 + ₹1000 extra for accommodation, also IMs, GMs,
and players with a chess rating greater than 2200 shall be exempted from the above
expenses. Some expected expenses are as follows:
Total amount raised due to participation: ₹ 5,60,000
Total expenditure as prize money: ₹ 3,40,000
( The net amount results in a profit for the Technology Students’ Gymkhana)
Benefits:
• Influx of chess players from all over India will push our players to learn and compete to
the best of their abilities.
• Enthusiastic students with no prior experience will get a platform to explore the world of
chess, with skilled players to guide them through.
• It will help like minded chess lovers to interact.
