Cognitive Development
• Cognitive development is the formation of thought
processes, including remembering, problem solving,
and decision-making, and the use of language from
childhood through adolescence to adulthood.
• It is a field of study in neuroscience and psychology
that focuses on development in the specific areas
that include conceptual resources, information
processing, perceptual skill, and language acquisition.
Cognitive Development
• Gauvain and Richert (2016) define cognitive
development as the process by which human beings
acquire, organize, and learn to use knowledge.
• He discusses two aspects of cognitive development:
“what develops,‟ or the content of knowledge, and
“how knowledge develops.”
Cognitive Development
• Discussion of “what develops‟ focuses on concepts,
the mental groupings of similar objects and other
entities that play a fundamental role in organizing
knowledge of experience. The processes of memory,
problem solving, reasoning and executive function
are used to describe “how‟ knowledge develops.
Socio-emotional Development
• Interact with others
• Relate with others and obey
social rules
• Relate to others in different
social situations
